Apple has acquired a permit to test self-driving cars on public roads in the state of California, according to a Friday release from the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles reported on by The Hill.
Apple has released scant details about its autonomous car efforts, dubbed Project Titan, an effort it hasn’t even formally acknowledged.
An Apple spokesperson declined to comment directly on the new permit but pointed to a statement about Apple’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration comments from December.
“We’ve provided comments to NHTSA because Apple is investing heavily in machine learning and autonomous systems,” the statement read. “There are many potential applications for these technologies, including the future of transportation, so we want to work with NHTSA to help define the best practices for the industry.”
The NHTSA had sought comment on developing industry standards on self driving cars. Read more at The Hill.
