Wikipedia-Israel has posted 28,000 photos of pre-state Eretz Yisroel only available until now in the archives of organizations such as the Jewish National Fund. Wikipedia admitted that the organizations were uncooperative and hopes that this preemptive strike will encourage them to free more photos of their own initiative.

“These photos, which tell the history of the people who lived in this region between the years 1900-1946, were not accessible for search, study, research, and use by the Israeli public and throughout the world,” Wikipedia argued.

Despite the expiration of copyrights after 50 years by Israeli law, the Association of Israeli Archivists blasted Wikipedia for the “sting operation” as “thieves in the night” and was not certain whether Wikipedia is legally in the clear.

The trove depicts Jews, Arabs, immigrants, farm workers, soldiers and every aspect of the aliyah and development of the country during those years.
