rav-shteinman$50,000 in cash and checks worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were stolen Thursday from the home of Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman while the rosh yeshiva was at an ateres chizuk in Beitar and Yerushalayim.

Thursday night, after 10 o’clock, Rav Shteinman returned to his home at 5 Rechov Chazon Ish in Bnei Brak to discover, much to his shock, that a substantial amount of money had been taken from his home.

The money was comprised of funds that Rav Shteinman received from various people to be distributed each Rosh Chodesh to roshei yeshivos, kollelim and various tzedakos.

There were no signs of a break-in, according to a report on Kikar.net,which led to the conclusion that the thief was probably in possession of a key to Rav Shteinman’s home. Police sources also estimate that the thief, who knew exactly where to access the money, is connected in some way to the members of Rav Shteinman’s family, or at least knows someone familiar with the family, as the thief knew exactly when Rav Shteinman and his gabbaim wouldn’t be home.

Police were at the scene and collected evidence for many hours, in the hope that the investigation will result in the finding of the missing monies.

Various askanim have expressed criticism of those responsible for Rav Shteinman’s home for not properly guarding the home of the gadol, especially when he is not home.

Either way, Rav Shteinman was forced to turn away those who had expected to receive funds from him. Those close to Rav Shteinman related that he is in great pain as a result of what happened and feels anguish that he has had to turn away roshei yeshivos and mosdos desperately in need of funds.

  1. was the money in American bills or in shekolim? i’m curious because the report says dollars. does that mean mamish dollars or the equivalent in shekels?

  2. To #10
obviously the gevirim did a gevaldige xzach by donating. they got their mitzvah anyway.
the shailah now is alleviating the pain to our gadol. Maran Rav aharon yehudah leib suffered a brutal geneivah. how can we all work to help him out. what can we each do

  3. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need some American gevirim to come up with the money to help rav hsteinman. Can you imagine the tzaar he must be experiencing?!!

  4. Do our gedolim have any sort of security? Is there any reason that we don’t protect or treasured gedolim? We are at fault here for allowing this to happen. We have to protect our gedolim like lehavdil the world protects governmental leaders.

  5. seriously – the gabbaim should be fired
whoever is responsible for Rav Shteinman’s safety and security should find a new job

  6. sad story, but according to some on MAtzav, [deleted by moderator] (I am sure this will be censored, but maybe one of the sensors will see the light.”

Where do you think Rav Shteinman got the money to begin with? Don’t you think 50K would be beneficial for the poor of your city? Why should the American gevirim be charged double because Rav Shteinman’s gabbaim or whoever was reckless and took advantage of him?

  8. Let’s look at this from another angle. Perhaps it is the biggest Bracha this money will not be distributed to Mosdos of Torah. Perhaps the money was tainted! Here, Min Hashomayim it was Paskened that it was not Kosher!!!

  9. What about the Gevirims Tzar that donated all that money to begin with?! If the money isn’t secured why shojuld they donate again? Why don’t you donate?

  10. Why doesn’t Rav Shteinman just donate money to Kupat Hair and then a miracle will happen and he will get the money back?

  11. The achrayus is most definitely on the ben bayis or beni bayis or shamash or gabbai or whoever takes care of the SHteinman household. The achrayus is not on Rav Shteinman. Thus, the person responsible has to figure out what to do.

  12. its intewresting how the security is so tight when i want to come speak to the rav or ask a shyla . i have to jump hoops to finally have a min with him but when it comes to safe keeping his house and assets there is no one to blame . what a backwards system !

  13. The lessons to be learned from this maaseh are simple.
    1. Don’t keep large amounts of money around.
    2. Don’t tell anyone that you keep lots of money in your house.
    3. Don’t try to figure out why God does what He does. You don’t know. Leave it at that.

  14. The lesson: enact proper internal controls with the help of professionals. I’ve outlined some basic internal controls for an organization receiving cash. The more money received and distributed, the more internal controls are needed. A grocery store or pharmacy transports less cash than what was on hand in armed transport. Obviously, the controls need tightened.

I don’t care to read beyond the basics.
