Conservative media personality Ben Shapiro and his father, currently in Eretz Yisroel, visited the Har Habayis today and davened Minchah there.

“You can’t come to Israel and not visit the Temple Mount,” Ben said.

The Shapiros were accompanied today by Rabbi Shimshon Elbaum, head of the Temple Mount Institute.

It should be noted that all preeminent poskim have ruled that it is forbidden nowadays to visit the Har Habayis.

  1. This is a let-down indeed! If the overwhelming majority of orthodox rabbis and sefarim have forbidden ascending the Har Habayit, why would Ben do it? I feel let down.

  2. Classic case of letting politics trump halacha.
This is what happens when you don’t have a rebbe and mesora that you follow….
Bad move, Ben. Please consult with competent talmid chacham on how you should do teshuva for this.
Honestly, do you really think that your political statement that you made with your visit makes Hashem happy and now you have a part in bringing peace a little closer?
Why not follow halacha and let Hashem run his world. He doesn’t need your help….how sad.

    • The chiyuv of kares is limited to the heichal, which was the azarah and the kodesh kodoshim. This is in addition to the fact that kares is only for a meizid which in this case means that he knew the place he was walking on was the place where the heichol stood, something that is very unlikely.

    • the only one that’s chayav anything is you, for being Megaleh Panim Batorah Shelo Kehalacha. Do some learning before posting snide comments.

  3. And dressed like he is going to play a game of baseball. What a desecration of a Makom Kadosh. Maybe some people will now wake up and think twice before accepting his Hashkafos.

  4. Funny, I acknowledge that going into Har Habayis proper is wrong, but. When I read about Ben and how the commentators approach the issue, my take is that it is THEY that have done more wrong than Ben. Just like gmara Sanhendrin where Dovid Hamelech pointed out to his detractors calling him out for supposed eshes eesh, that they sinned worse than he allegedly did by way of their improper reproach.

  5. Find it amusing that most ppl here are surprised. Ben Shapiro has crazy Hashkafos. He has stated openly that he has a “problem” with Tefillah and he “doesn’t believe it works”. He picks and chooses what works for him, when convenient.

  6. “All preeminent poskim have ruled that it is forbidden nowadays to visit the Har Habayis.”
    Really?
Actually, there’s a pretty long list of Rabbonim and Rosheii Yeshiva who both permit it and go up themselves.
(Although many go up without fanfare, so you wouldn’t know about it.)

However, I suppose one could say that anyone who says it’s OK cannot be considered “preeminent” (No True Scotsman).

But what exactly is the argument of those who forbid it, other than that past generations did not allow it and we must listen to those of past generations, even though present-day reality is entirely different?

Why is Shapiro obligated to follow haredi poskim, rather than the non-haredi poskim and Roshei Yeshiva who DO permit it and DO go up? Why can’t he follow the poskim and Rabbonim of his own culture, whether or not the Yeshiva WOrld considers them “preeminent”?

Here’s a challenge to one and all: Learn the suggya, familiarize yourself with present-day reality on Har haBayit (very different than it was decades ago, for one thing), read the detailed explanations of those that permit it, read the explanations of those who forbid it, and then get back to us with a well-argued explanation showing why the ones who permit are wrong, other than their being “non-haredi.”

    Good luck with that.

    • And here is a challenge for you…name ONE of your non-chareidi Rabbonim that come to the toe nails of the Brisker Rov and the Chazon ish….How pathetic of you to put them in the same category. Last I saw no one was lining up to the doors of your Rabbonim a block long to get brachos and eitzos from them…..

  7. What are you doing when you ascend the mount? There is no Temple where walls demarcate the heavens have a structure.

Any help is not proper. We daven at the kosel.

The guys who ascend against told over told unapproved rabbinic dream are jewish skin heads. This is not courage. We really have a complicated situation and Ishmael finds no hunger to see Bad Jews run around the gash he is putting in our culture.

A bad situation and this lad is too tight to the right wing to say pity. That is politics. Not fury of the value of a culture.

  8. Dovid,

You are 100% correct. I fully agree with you, although my poskim don’t allow it and I would not go up to Har Habayis.
Torah ahs been full of machlokes in din, there is’t a page in the gemarah without a mochlokes, and suddenly no talmid chochom is allowed to have an opinion. Rav Moshe Tendler A”H was a very big supporter of going up.
