9-11-ground-zeroStarting today, you can reserve tickets to visit the 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero. There will be no charge for the tickets, but, for now, there will be a limit on how many people can go to the site at one time.

As of 1:00 p.m. today, reservations were already sold out for both September 12 and 13. There are still slots available on September 14 and beyond.

“In the beginning, we can have up to 8,000 – around 7,000 or 8,000 people per day,” says Joe Daniels, president of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

The numbers will be adjusted based on how long people stay.

The memorial plaza can only comfortably hold 1,500 people at a time.

The memorial opens to the public on September 12, at which point reservations will be available every half hour.

“For modeling purposes, we’ve projected or estimated that it’ll be about an hour visit. I have a feeling it could be less than that,” he says.

Daniels expects it to be a popular destination.

“People feel that, when they come to New York City now that this is a place that they have to go to. It’s almost like a pilgrimage,” he says.

There will be a separate reservation for 9/11 families.

“Anytime a family wants to come visit, we’re gonna make that happen,” he says.

The memorial features the waterfalls in the footprints of the Twin Towers as well as the names of the victims.

The museum itself won’t be ready to open until this fall.
