A Father in the Stands; A Father in Heaven

Fans at a recent Philadelphia Phillies baseball game were treated to real heartwarming scene. I believe the rest of us, though not spectators of the sport, can learn a heartwarming lesson as well.

Steve Monforto has been coming to Phillies games since he was three years old, and as any fan of the game, he always longed for a foul ball to be hit his way. Alas, now and adult and coming to the games with his wife and two children, he never got the elusive souvenir ball. This past Tuesday night, a pitch was fouled off in Steve’s direction. He reached over the wall in front of his seats, and made an impressive two-handed grab, earning him a round of cheers from the crowd. Steve was elated, but as any good father would typically do, he handed it over to his little three-year-old daughter Emily.

Then the unthinkable happened.

Emily threw the ball back onto the field.

The youngster quickly realized that she had done something wrong, and as she began despair, her father hugged her, and at the same time assured her that everything was okay.

To review: After all of the years of loyally waiting, Steve had finally caught the prize, and then gave over the shiny new prize possession to his dear daughter, and she promptly rejected it, throwing it away. Rather than get angry, or be disappointed at the spoiled occasion, he saw her regret, and embraced her with love.

Our Father in heaven has given us an immeasurably valuable gift, teshuva. He waits for us patiently to take advantage of this gift, yet we tend to childishly reject it, stubbornly throwing the opportunity away. But no matter how irrational we sometimes act, our Father will always lovingly accept us. He will embrace us, and we can be assured that we will find favor in his eyes.

We just have to show a little bit of regret. An iota of disappointment with our choices, and an inkling of despair for their outcomes.

Im yirtzeh Hashem, Hakadosh Boruch Hu will warmly accept our teshuva sheleima and all of our tefillos will be answered for a wonderful year with gezunt, nachas, mazel, parnassah, shidduchim, and hatzlacha for all of Klal Yisroel.

Are you suggesting that it’s okay if don’t do a Teshuva Shilaima?! It sounds to me like %100 Apikursus!

  2. Wow! Thank you Matzav.com for posting this, and to the author.

K’siva V’chasima Tova and a Gut Gebentched Yar to all of Klal Yisrael!
