Each year, the Jewish Daily Forward lists 50 influential Jewish leaders in the U.S. This year, the list includes politicians like Rep. Gabrielle Gifford and Anthony Weiner, celebs like Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, as well as activists, scholars and religious figures.
The honorary 51st on the 2011 list is President Barack Obama, a Christian whose politics have elicited a range of responses from American Jews. Some continue to support the Democratic president (who appointed a number of Jewish staffers, including fellow Forward 50 honoree Rahm Emanuel), but others have been turned off by his approach to Israel. It’s hard to gauge the Jewish population on Obama generally, since polls are mixed.
“Support him, loathe him or feel wildly ambivalent – whatever you think of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States has done more than any other non-Jew we can think of to shape the American Jewish story in 2011,” wrote the Forward, a historically liberal publication.

One of the first on the list was David Yerushalmi, a Lubavitcher who’s a shtark talmid chochom as well as one of the shrewdest lawyers who devotes his talent battling radical Islam and battling against liberalism. From the Forward:
David Yerushalmi
Activism
Over the last 18 months, about two dozen state legislatures have taken up bills that would restrict judges from consulting Shariah, or traditional Islamic law, in their rulings. Three states have passed such laws.
It is a wave that began five years ago in the Crown Heights office of lawyer David Yerushalmi, a 56-year-old Lubavitch-affiliated Jew with a history of controversial statements about race, Islam and other Jews. It was Yerushalmis model legislation for these bills that a network of conservative groups sponsored and then pushed to get state legislatures to adopt. Critics question the legislations constitutionality as well as the view of Shariah as a creeping threat to Americas legal system.
Yerushalmis new initiative, called The Mapping Sharia Project in America, unveiled its initial offering this past summer: a study of 100 American mosques that purports to show a direct link between Shariah law and support for violent jihad. Mainstream scholars have disparaged Yerushalmis research. But Yerushalmi has demonstrated an ability to edge his ideas into the mainstream, despite denunciations from hate-group watchdogs such as the Anti-Defamation League.
Yerushalmi is also targeting a broader enemy than Islam: liberal democracy. In his writings, he emphasizes Americas roots as a white, male-dominated, Christian country and criticizes political correctness for discouraging the discussion of why the founding fathers did not give women or black slaves the right to vote. Yerushalmi singles out the radical liberal Jew as an especially destructive agent in spreading liberal doctrines that, in his view, place international law above nationhood including in Israel.

What is happening to the world?
Since when is Obama Jewish? I was of the impression that he was Moslem, or Christian as he claims. How can a person be Moslem, Christian and Jewish in one life? Seems too much to handle…
Obama and Yiddishkeit don’t go together. It’s like putting together fire and water.
Please let me know when the world becomes normal again.
#11, Shocked. Why are you so surprised. This article is from the unYiddish left wing newspaper(?), the Forward. Not surprising.
By the way, the world will be normal, perfect, only when Moshiach comes.
If Clinton can be called the first black president by Harlem community leaders, then Osama -I mean Obama – can be the first Jewish president.
…And WHOA to all us yiidin, if we can be “shaped” by a sheker like the first Irish president; O’Bama
