abbasPalestinian president Mahmud Abbas attends a meeting of the committee of Arab foreign ministers in Doha over the weekend to discuss the progress of the Palestinian demand for state membership in the United Nation.

Palestinian chairman Mahmoud Abbas was apparently caught on camera declaring that he will never recognize a “Jewish state.”

Abbas made the startling statement in an interview last month on Egyptian TV that was monitored, translated and posted Tuesday by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

“First of all, let me make something clear about the story of the Jewish state,” Mahmoud Abbas tells Dream2TV on Oct. 23. “They started talking to me about the Jewish state only two years ago.”

“I’ve said it before and I will say it again: I will never recognize the Jewishness of the state or a Jewish state.”

Abbas, in the same unsettling interview, also weighs in on Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held captive for five years by Hamas militants.

He was released last month in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners.

The Palestinian leader calls the fact that they were able to hold Shalit captive in Gaza for five years “a good thing.”

“They were able to keep him and hide him,” he said.

MEMRI, a Washington-based watchdog group founded by a former Israeli intelligence officer, monitors and translates Middle Eastern media.

Critics have questioned the accuracy of some of MEMRI’s translations and accused the group of carrying water for right wing Israelis by focusing too much on extremist Arabs and ignoring moderate voices.

Abbas, however, is supposed to be more moderate than Hamas, which has called for the outright destruction of Israel and has accused the Palestinian leader of being a U.S. puppet.

Also, contrary to what Abbas says in the interview, the Israelis have long demanded Palestinian recognition of their country as a Jewish state.

Abbas, who controls only the West Bank, recently defied the Israelis and President Obama by formally asking the United Nations to recognize the Palestinian territory as a independent state.

  1. Mr Abbas, can you please say that REALLY LOUDLY and CLEARLY to the American and Western Press- can you also please write letters to the all western heads of state stating it clearly and in caps. Please make sure the Israel media gets it too. What a beautifully clear and truthful statement.

  2. The reason they were able to keep and hide him was they had the help of the Israeli government, which forced the Jewish evacuation of Gaza.I bet Noam Shalit demonstrated in favor of the evacuation and abandonment of the entire Gush

  3. Chaim, can you substantiate the claim in your last sentence? I would be very interested to know if that is true. Thank you. BTW I agree with Abbas, “Israel” is not a Jewish state, but this is a question of fact and not opinion. The problem with Abbas’s position on this issue is he has said not one Jew (Israeli?) would be allowed to live in his new state, and other Arab states are already self-declared Muslim states. From their point, what’s good for the goose ought to be good for the gander.

There is no Jewish state until Moshiach, may he come immediately.

  4. Secular Jews – who want him to recognize Israel as Jewish – should start acting Jewish insteaad of desecrating Jewish laws full time. Why should Abbas recognize it as Jewish if they don’t?

  5. Thanks to Obama he has made it clear as day that the United States position is that not only is it a Jewish State but it is the Jewish Homeland as well.
