tefillin1The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) urged Tuesday to better educate airline personnel about Jewish religious practices after and incident in which flight attendants issued a security alert when three Mexican Jews began praying with Tefillin.

Flight attendants aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 241 from Mexico City to Los Angeles issued a security alert on Sunday after three Orthodox Jewish passengers began praying with Tefillin.

Following the alert the place was met at LAX by fire crews, foam trucks, FBI agents, and police.

“In today’s atmosphere of heightened security concern, it is understandable that passengers might be alarmed upon noticing fellow travelers bearing unfamiliar or seemingly strange objects,” said Deborah M. Lauter, ADL Civil Rights Director. “The incident aboard Alaska Airways Flight 241 is a reminder that many people, including airline personnel, are unfamiliar with religious ritual items and practices.”

The ADL has offered to assist with training programs for the flight crew.

  1. It is a big obligation that men take upon themslves to daven three times a day, in all sorts of circumstances. That begin said, it is pure seichel (common sense) to alert a flight crew that you are going to be doing something unusual. I think the achrayas is just as much on the passenger as it is on the airlines.

  2. I have personally taken flights very early in the morning and did exactly what AHUVA54 (comment #1) posted. I went to the flight attendant, explained that I had to pray and asked if there was somewhere in the back where I can pray without disturbing the other passengers. Each time, the attendant was more than happy to oblige and let me stand in their area. The only request they made was that if their was turbulence to please return to my seat.

  3. Daven in your seat as recommended by Rav Yakov Kaminetski zt”l and put on tefillin upon arrival. Remember we are less than 1% of the world’s population, and let us start acting like that.
