Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, following extensive discussions with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul, emphasized the imperative of Palestinian unity amidst Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza, urging solidarity for what he termed as “victory.”

Despite Erdogan’s vocal support for Hamas and criticism of Israel, his attempts to broker peace in the Gaza conflict have faced significant obstacles, with limited success.

Erdogan stressed the critical importance of Palestinian unity, asserting that it is indispensable for countering Israel and achieving success in the conflict.

“The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory lie in unity and integrity,” Erdogan reiterated, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.

In the context of escalating tensions and regional dynamics, Erdogan underscored the need to keep international focus on Gaza, cautioning against allowing recent events involving Iran and Israel to divert attention.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz strongly condemned the meeting between Erdogan and Haniyeh, denouncing their association and accusing Erdogan of supporting extremist acts.

Hamas, founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood, has been a pivotal player in the Palestinian landscape since its inception in 1987.

With Qatar reconsidering its mediation role, Erdogan dispatched Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Doha, signaling Turkey’s continued interest in playing a role in mediation efforts.

Erdogan reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to championing the Palestinian cause and serving as a voice for the oppressed, expressing his determination to continue his advocacy efforts.

Hamas has maintained a presence in Turkey since 2011, a development facilitated by Turkish diplomatic efforts, particularly in securing the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Erdogan’s close relationship with Haniyeh, marked by frequent meetings, underscores Turkey’s enduring ties with Hamas.

While Turkish authorities have not confirmed allegations of providing support to Hamas officials, there have been assertions of past assistance from Turkey, including the provision of information and passports.

If Qatar withdraws from its mediation role, Turkey may seek to bolster its mediation efforts leveraging its connections with Hamas, although Israel is unlikely to accept Turkey in such a role given the strained relations between the two countries.

Fidan held discussions with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, emphasizing the urgent need for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza to address the looming threat of famine.

Turkey has been a key provider of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, dispatching substantial supplies and medicine to alleviate the humanitarian crisis.

Despite Erdogan’s vocal criticism of Israel and its actions in Gaza, his potential role in mediation efforts is likely to be limited due to his contentious rhetoric and strained relations with Israel.

Last year, Erdogan’s comparison of Netanyahu’s tactics to those of Adolf Hitler and his characterization of Israel as a “terrorist state” further strained relations between Turkey and Israel.
