37. That’s the number of attorney visits former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has merited since he started serving his 19-month prison sentence twelve weeks after being convicted in March 2014 in the Holyland real estate corruption case.

Prison regulations mandate that prisoners are permitted visits of close family members or a lawyer representing them. In practice, however, any lawyer can visit as long as the prisoner claims they represent them. Most of Olmert’s visitors are lawyers who are not working on his particular case.

As a result, the Israel Prisons Service are changing the rules for prisoner visitation to ensure equality for all prisoners. Under the new regulations, inmates can only get three visits from lawyers each week, with just one 45-minute visit by a single firm each day.
