If you rely on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) for your routine commute, be prepared for delays: the NYC Dept. of Transportation has announced plans to spend 1.7 billion dollars and five years to repair a one-and-a-half mile stretch of the aging highway.

Construction is expected to begin in two years, and transportation officials said they hope to keep lanes open during the repairs. The projected is expected to be completed in 2022.

The project will be most expensive ever undertaken by the New York City Department of Transportation.

The BQE is one of the city’s most vital corridors, with roughly 140,000 vehicles traveling on the highway each day.

  1. I’ve been driving on the BQE for over forty years and I can barely a time there wasn’t construction related delays on it. Highway improvements frequently make no sense (what are they fixing?) and go on forever.Which is why I think a lot of them are done as political paybacks to the unions and other such groups.
