An allegedly drunk driver brought down part of a house in Suffolk County when he crashed through the home’s second floor. Incredibly, no one inside the house was hurt. It looked like an action movie stunt gone wrong, a vehicle airborne and smashing into the second story of a house in East Moriches.
The ruined house has been boarded up, covering the massive opening that looked like a wrecking ball had taken number whacks at the home.
An SUV demolished the house when it crashed into it around 12:30 a.m. A home video shows that, instead of rolling into the home at ground level, the vehicle crashed onto the house’s second floor.
Police say the allegedly drunk driver ran a stop sign and hit a berm, causing the SUV to be catapulted action-movie style. From the second floor, the vehicle dropped down to the first floor vertically, with it’s headlights pointing toward the sky.
Homeowner John Sarli says he’s lucky to be alive. He was the only person at the home, sleeping on a couch in the den when he heard the crash and the sound of glass breaking.
A neighbor said the noise of the crash shattered the peace in the quiet, upscale neighborhood.
“I was awakened with the crash, there was a dirt smell, glass everywhere, smoke alarm beeping,” Sarli said. “The jeep doors were open and they were already out. I saw one come to the porch, I asked him to call 9-1-1 and he did.”
Police arrested the driver of the car. He’s identified as 20-year-old Adam Clark of East Moriches, and he had minor injuries.
He has been charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief.
There was a passenger in Clark’s vehicle who walked away without injuries.
As the home enters a long renovation process, the driver must get ready for the first of many court appearances.
