The number of passengers who flew on U.S. airlines in 2020 was about 60% less than the year before, according to data from the Department of Transportation released Tuesday.
Domestic flights saw a 58.7% decline in passengers from 2019, while international flights had 70.4% fewer passengers. April had the largest drop (96.1%) from the year before.
“The large airlines carried 30 million passengers in December 2020 [preliminary], compared to 79 million passengers in December 2019 and up from 3 million in April 2020, which was the lowest monthly total in BTS records dating back to 1974,” reads the press release from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. “The previous low was 14.6 million passengers in February 1975.”
In December 2020, 30.4 million passengers traveled in total, down 62% from the year before when 79 million traveled, with 27.2 million passengers on domestic flights, down 61% from December 2019 when 69.5 million flew, and 3.2 million international passengers, down 66% from the year before when 9.5 million flew.
