During an appearance on Newsmax’s “The Record With Greta Van Susteren,” former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman conveyed his concern over President Joe Biden’s decision to refuse a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting that it sends a message to the world that “Israel is just not that important.”

Friedman stressed the significance of Netanyahu as the democratically elected leader of Israel, emphasizing Israel’s crucial role as America’s primary ally in the Middle East, if not the entire world. He highlighted Netanyahu’s global prominence and his longstanding friendship with the United States. Despite this, President Biden extended an invitation to the previous prime minister, Naftali Bennett, while excluding Netanyahu.

While acknowledging that the discourtesy towards Netanyahu is not his primary concern, Friedman underscored the implications of Biden’s actions during this critical juncture. With negotiations involving Iran, Russia, and China, Biden’s distancing of America from Israel can be perilous and counterproductive.

“The prime minister is the democratically elected leader of Israel,” Friedman said during an appearance on Newsmax’s “The Record With Greta Van Susteren.” “Israel is the most important ally of America in the Middle East, maybe in the entire world. He’s really one of the best known leaders in the world today.

“He’s been a great friend of America his whole life. And President Biden, while he’s invited Naftali Bennett, who was the prior prime minister, to visit the White House, refuses to invite Netanyahu.

“It’s not the discourtesy that bothers me so much. Netanyahu’s a big boy; he can handle that. It’s the message, which Biden is sending to the world at this critical time. When he’s speaking with Iran and he’s negotiating with Russia, China … to send this message that there’s daylight between America and Israel is dangerous and very counterproductive.”

Friedman also discussed the direct impact of Iran’s uranium enrichment program on Israel, as the country faces constant threats. Israel’s deep involvement in the outcome of these discussions makes the refusal to meet with Netanyahu a dangerous signal to Iran, suggesting that Israel’s concerns hold little importance in the negotiation process. This, according to Friedman, does not bode well for achieving a favorable outcome.

Addressing Biden’s comment about not planning to host Netanyahu, Friedman interpreted it as a criticism of Netanyahu’s government’s efforts to exert greater control over the Israeli Supreme Court. Friedman expressed that internal Israeli politics regarding judicial reform should not concern the United States. He commended Israel’s democratic nature, highlighting how it heeds the voices of its citizens and reevaluates its agenda based on public concerns.

Furthermore, Friedman noted the ongoing efforts in the United States to pack the Supreme Court, which he believes pose a greater threat to America and have the potential to politicize the judiciary. He pointed out that Israelis, including Netanyahu, do not criticize such matters because they are not within Israel’s purview. Friedman viewed America’s deep involvement in Israel’s internal affairs as intrusive, patronizing, and paternalistic.
