Saudi Arabia is making a “strategic mistake and miscalculation” by favoring ties with the US and Israel over Iran, the Islamic Republic’s president asserted on Wednesday.

Hassan Rouhani’s comment — made at a cabinet meeting in Tehran and reported on by Iranian media outlets — came amid heightened regional tensions following recent developments in Lebanon and Yemen.

Earlier this week, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused Iran-backed Hezbollah of being behind the Saturday launch of a missile — which was intercepted — at Riyadh from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen. Jubeir called the incident an “act of war.”

And over the weekend, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri stepped down, citing a fear of an Iran-hatched assassination plot. In his resignation message, Hariri — a Saudi ally — slammed Iran for its aggression throughout the Middle East, saying the Tehran regime “spreads destruction and strife wherever it is.”

Rouhani on Wednesday warned Saudi Arabia, “You are well aware of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s power and position, and powers bigger than you have not been able to do anything against the Iranian nation. The US and its allies mobilized all their possibilities and power, but they could do nothing.”
