US lawmakers have announced the creation of a group to promote US interests as newly restored US-Cuba relations evolve. Twelve lawmakers from both parties did so in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. The Cuba Working Group in the House of Representatives is to be formally created on December 17, 2015. It will push to "advance policy proposals that are in our national interest in an era in which the US-Cuba relationship is rapidly being reshaped," the letter said. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday charged Republicans with promoting cruelty to children at the border, characterizing the GOP’s compromise immigration bill as a deal with the devil.

The debate over immigrants has been shaken in recent weeks by the outcry over the separation of migrant children and their parents at the border — a consequence of a recent administrative crackdown on illegal border crossings that left Ryan and GOP leaders scrambling for a legislative fix. On Tuesday, the Republicans added provisions to the more moderate DACA bill designed to keep families together.

But Pelosi is not happy with the compromise and feels the Democrats would do a better job dealing with illegal border crossers.

“It may be a compromise with the devil, but it’s not a compromise with the Democrats. … Their bills are anti-family, perpetuate child detention, undermine existing protections [and] cut off many people who have been waiting lawfully to enter the country.”
