A Washington, DC, police officer who responded to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot committed suicide in the days after the siege, the acting chief of the Metropolitan Police Department told members of Congress.

Officer Jeffrey Smith is one of two cops to commit suicide in the aftermath of the riot. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood also died by suicide soon after the insurrection.

Officer Brian Sicknick, also of the Capitol Police, died after being beaten by rioters as they tried to break into the building in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

  1. I just read that these Capital Police felt really let down by the leadership above them. They all must feel like failures for listening to what they said and not acting by instinct. They were probably not given the right commands and the guilt and shame is killing them. Very understandable. They were made into a mockery.
