MKs Tamar Zandberg of Meretz and Yehuda Glick of Likud submitted three bills that would require tobacco companies to publicize the ingredients in cigarettes and place cigarette production under government supervision.

Part of the impetus for the bills wasreports that cigarettes have 4,000 to 7,500 chemicals, 350 of them dangerous to health and 70 of them carcinogenic. 1.2 billion Israelis smoke more than 7 billion cigarettes annually. This leads to an estimated 8,000 deaths a year, including 800 non-smokers fatally sickened by passive inhalation of smoke in their vicinity.

An additional health issue is obesity. A survey released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) indicated that 53 percent of Israelis are overweight and 16.6 percent obese.

On the bright side, life expectancy in Israel increased by ten years since 1970,the same as the OECD average, to an average 82.1 years.

  1. Not that I like cigarettes, but don’t you get an impression that the liberal-fascists are a global conspiracy who follow each other’s trends half the world away.

  2. Uh oh, here it comes. Same thing happened in theU.S. years ago. Now look at the culture of smoking in US.

So, giving up smoking in Israel us like getting good rid of chillul Shabbis or toeva relationships. How will this country go on?
