Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., threatened to rally support for a movement aimed at removing Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., after he and other Senate Democrats endorsed a continuing resolution bill that would fund the government through September 30, according to multiple media reports.

On Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez spoke with CNN’s Jake Tapper, just a day before the Senate voted to approve the bill. “I think that would be a mistake,” Ocasio-Cortez responded when Tapper questioned her about Schumer’s backing of the measure.

The Senate passed the continuing resolution on Friday. The following day, The New York Times reported that Ocasio-Cortez was reportedly contemplating a run for Schumer’s Senate seat in 2028. During her interview on Thursday, Tapper had asked if she would consider challenging Schumer, but she avoided directly answering. As of now, there are no reports confirming that Ocasio-Cortez has explicitly declared an intention to oppose Schumer in the future.

At the same time, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., predicted on Tuesday that Senate Democrats would vote in favor of the resolution. By Friday, Massie posted on X, “As I predicted 3 days ago, senate democrats carried this across the finish line because it’s basically a continuation of the Schumer-Biden-Johnson 2024 omnibus. 10 senate democrats voted yes and 1 senate republican voted no (Rand Paul!)”

Anticipating the passing of the CR, House Democrats began voicing criticism of their colleagues who supported the bill. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., the House’s top Democrat, along with others, released a joint statement on Thursday that said, “Donald Trump and Republicans are crashing the economy. They plan to take a chainsaw to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, veterans benefits and public schools — all in order to give massive tax cuts to their billionaire donors and wealthy corporations. House Democrats will not be complicit. We remain strongly opposed to the partisan spending bill under consideration in the Senate.”

The Times also reported on Friday that a group of young Democrats were organizing to oust the older party leadership. “Our party needs more of a fighting spirit,” said Chris Deluzio, Pennsylvania’s 40-year-old Democratic representative. “This is not a normal administration, and they’re willing to do dangerous things.” He noted that the divide was “not solely along generational lines. But I do think the newer, younger members maybe get this intuitively.”

Amanda Litman, a leader at Run for Something, a progressive nonprofit political group, remarked, “The generation that got us to this point does not have the skills or stomach to get us to the next point.” Litman added that she is seeing younger generations already beginning to plot primary challenges. “I would not be surprised to see, if not quite a Tea Party equivalent, a wave of challengers against old Democratic incumbents in particular,” she said. “It is not going to be ideological. It’s going to be style.”

  2. We’d all love to see Schumer crash but not to this useless piece of trash. (I would have the appropriate pronoun but Matzav editors would have nixed my comment on account!)

  3. That would be great. If Popeye wins the democrat nomination, that would guarantee a Republican pickup, assuming they have a viable candidate, like a Lee Zeldin or Rob Astorino.
