In a story published yesterday about what it called “a conflict” over housing in Lakewood, New Jersey, The Associated Press claimed that the issue “was caused by an influx of Hasidic Jews.”

Today, The Associated Press admitted that it had goofed, making a mistake that many unfamiliar with the frum community make: calling any frum Jew a “Hasidic” Jew.

In a statement today, The Associated Press said that “While the town has a large population of Hasidic Jews, according to Avi Schnall, the state director of Agudath Israel of America, an organization representing Orthodox Jews, the story should have noted that the majority of the Jews in Lakewood are of Lithuanian Ashkenazi descent and that Orthodox Jews overall are driving the housing crunch.”

  1. Really, everyone knows that “Hasidic Jews” is a phrase used by outsiders to refer to all orthodox Jews. How Silly. Don’t we have more important issues to bring Up?

  2. “the story should have noted that the majority of the Jews in Lakewood are of Lithuanian Ashkenazi descent ”

Very few frum Jews are of Lithuanian descent. Even fewer are from Lithuanian descent on both sides (mother and father). Ask around and you’ll see, most frum Jews are from Polish, Romanian, Czech, Hungarian, and Russian descent, and usually a combination. I, for example, am of Russian descent on my father’s side, and Hungarian and Polish descent on my mother’s side. What about you?
