asteroid-earthClose call. A newly found asteroid will fly “very close” to Earth on Sunday but won’t hit it or any of humanity’s artificial satellites. NASA says the flyby space rock will be about 60 feet long and will not be visible to the naked eye but can be seen through an amateur’s telescope.

NASA is currently working on methods to deflect threatening asteroids so they don’t unexpectedly crash into the planet, as one did over Russia in 2013. Read more at CNN.

  1. It passed 34,000 km from the earth. Geosynchronous satellites are at 36,000 km, so it’s inside the GEO belt, but above low (like the International Space Station) and medium earth orbit (like GPS) satellites.

Space is big, so the likelihood of collision with a GEO satellite was minuscule.
