More than 128,000 people received a dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine this week as the United States began an unprecedented mobilization to deploy vaccines and eventually end a pandemic that has upended every aspect of American life.

The federal government expected to initially deliver enough vaccine for 2.9 million people to receive a first dose, less than 1 percent of the country’s population and not enough even for the health care workers and long-term care facility residents who are at the front of the line.

But the shipments, which came after a record-setting race to develop, study and approve a vaccine, marked a turning point in the pandemic at a time when deaths and cases continue to set records. Federal regulators on Friday gave emergency approval to a second vaccine, developed by Moderna, which was expected to be distributed in the coming days. Both vaccines require patients to receive two doses spaced weeks apart.
