Benjamin Scheinkopf, known for decades as Ben the Barber, died after giving countless haircuts to Chicago citizens up until last year. He and his brother Josef survived the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by giving haircuts to its inmates.

His weight dropped to 65 pounds during that time. In later years, when his children were fussy about food, he would tell them, “We were starving. We would eat bark off the tree.”

Scheinkopf came from the Polish city of Plonsk, which had 5,000 Jews. Only a few dozen survived the Holocaust.
