bachmann-signFor Rep. Michele Bachmann, staunch support for Israel is a personal matter: Teenage Bachmann spent a summer working on a kibbutz in Israel.

The 55-year-old Minnesota Republican, founder of the House Tea Party Caucus and a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012, went to Israel in 1974, immediately after graduating from high school.

“I always had this love and appreciation for Israel because I was a Christian,” Bachmann, who was raised as a Lutheran, said in an interview with Matthew Continetti, opinion editor of The Weekly Standard. “It’s the foundation of our faith. All of the Bible is about Israel.”

The Israel she found in 1974 was “pretty grubby,” she recalled – brutal heat, soldiers with guns at the airport, customs officers at card tables on the tarmac, chickens everywhere.

The youth housing where Bachmann – then Michele Amble – lived on the kibbutz was called the ghetto. Lizards climbed the walls. She rose at 4 a.m. and rode to work on a flatbed truck pulled by an old diesel tractor. Her job: pulling weeds from cotton fields.

Soldiers escorted the workers everywhere, searching for mines. “You’re hoping at 4 o’clock in the morning that they see everything,” she told Continetti.

The experience has never left Bachmann’s mind. “If you consider what it was like in 1948,” she said, “and literally watch flowers bloom in a desert over time – I don’t know if any nation has paralleled the rise of Israel since 1948.”

Today, Bachmann is a member of Christians United for Israel and one of Israel’s strongest supporters in Congress. She has visited the Jewish state several times since taking office.

One Jewish Minnesota Republican has told Continetti of speeches at local Republican Jewish Coalition events where Bachmann has brought cheering audiences to their feet.

  1. Wow, she lived on a kibbutz. That means she is a strong lady who can shuck the wheat and organize the fields. Thats great. I am so sure that Michelle will be the future leader of humanity as a preamble to wellness and a preamble to the future of our liberal ideals right? I am certain that she has what it takes to negotiate abroad and bring hope to our people. She lived on a kibbutz right? Just a great thing to put on your resume as it simply means you must absolutely love all of the Jewish people. Sadly, I do not think she might agree with my own liberal interests and to me, a liberal approach is an American Approach.
    Thanks Michelle.
We will be sure you can open your own can of corn when you are president in the White House.

  2. #1 I GUESS YOU LIKE OBAMA BECAUSE HE SUPPORTS AMERICAN/RUSSIAN VALUES. AND BECAUSE HE WANTS TO MAKE AMERICA INTO A KIBBUTZ!

  3. The majority of Israelis don’t agree with your liberal approach, certainly not as articulated by your liberal President. Thankfully only 20% or so of Americans identify themselves as liberal so the liberal approach is hardly the American approach either.

  4. Beethoven, I think the only point of this article is that she is staunchly pro-Israel- and not just in word. This is of interest to the Jewish people in general and was therefore reported here. If you are a liberal ideologue, you are going to vote for Obama no matter what, so why don’t you just skip the articles about potential Republican candidates and let more open-minded people read them in peace.

  5. beethoven’s friend:

The American way IS CONSERVATISM. North of 90% of all ballot initiatives are won by the conservatives. Such as, 31 out of 31 states that asked on the ballot whether a Toeiva marriage bill should be passed, were voted down. We are just the silent majority that are hostage to the ULTRA LIBERAL media.

And thank you Jonathan. I was going to mention that. (Gallup: Conservatives continue to outnumber moderates and liberals in the American populace in 2009, confirming a finding that Gallup first noted in June. Forty percent of Americans describe their political views as conservative, 36% as moderate, and 20% as liberal.)

  6. Political Theories can Co-Exist. Liberalism and Conservativism are meant to exist together. I will post an article I wrote here for your interests and hope that you can see the real truth in what we are serving at the proverbial dinner table of life.

    Liberalism.

Why can’t we all be liberals and conservative. Conservatives are people who like to keep their peas on their proverbial plate. Liberals are people who mix their peas with their carrots.
This can be a good thing. But contrast that with the radical pluralists. Radical Pluralists are people who shove their pork chops down their pants because they think someone else is going to take it from them.

The point is that those on the Fox news and other places are not the true conservatives and are really radical pluralists fighting against a simple way of life for those of us with liberal minds.
This is not healthy and we must consider that our future is not to be lived without letting us mix our peas and carrots in life.

    Thanks.

  7. yitzy Klein. I am a jew who does not believe that we post our Full Names in a forum that is run for the edification of our debate on the issues. That said, If I have a particular thread that I want to post to my own personna, I have and will post my full birth name in a forum only to show you that I myself exist in reality.
But that said, you are afraid to capitalize your first name if that is your name “Yitzy”. Perhaps you are afraid that the liberal police are going to find you and tax your incomplete intelligence.

  8. I have a question for those who choose or reject candidiates based on one issue, (eg: pro-Israel = vote for him regardless of other positions/ lack of intelligence or pro-toeiva marriage= dont vote regardless of wether his policies are good for frum yidden), what do you do with a candidate who is both pro-Israel and pro-toeiva like gulliani? Do you vote for him or not?
    Thanks

  9. beethoven’s friend is a “basket (case) of radishes” on another (supposedly) frum website where he spews the most ridiculous and creepiest ideas.

  10. AA. I’d like to see you put your money where your mouth is and discuss what this “creepy” idea is. Perhaps its the idea that God is True and our People are Chosen. That is a concept I delve into quite a bit online. But sadliy, I dont really mind that there is a troll out there with my name on his doorstep. That means that my words stuck to someones inner being and that to me is success. Thanks.
Oh yes. I am indeed using the name Basket of Radishes and it is a basket of integrity. You can take your own basket case slime filled hate tempered resentment somewhere else and perhaps you wont be too busy with the forums either. That might be good for the carpets of our forums posts.

  11. Yankel,

I would not vote for Giuliani for the reason that, based on my understanding of R’ Miller, zt’l, and others, toeivah is extremely serious. Preferably, we would have someone pro-Israel, socially and fiscally conservative, but that seems too lofty a goal.

  12. Doesn’t matter. If she get’s the nomination, all the jewish democrats will be screaming “Anti-semite! Jew hater!” at the top of their lungs (I can hear debbie wasserman-shmutz already) and the liberal leftie jews (i.e. 75% of jews) will go like sheeple to the polls and vote for obama

  13. To Beethoven’s Friend:
You are most certainly entitled to your liberal views. However, that doesn’t mean that Michele Bachmann’s having been on a kibbutz is entirely insignificant.
Firstly, it shows that she has ideals.
It shows that she doesn’t see herself above menial labor.
And the fact that she is pro-Israel is significant not only for Jews but for America as well, because Israel is the only ally America has in the entire Middle East.

Beyond the kibbutz thing, there are other things that Bachmann brings with her. She has raised 5 children of her own and 23 who are not her biological children. She has actually worked at something other than “public service”. She has a record, unlike Obama who had no record whatsoever until he entered the White House.

I am not saying that I plan on voting for her. I have no clue which candidate I will end up voting for. But to dismiss her – and the fact that she volunteered on a kibbutz – as being nothing more than someone who we now know can open a can of corn by herself is belittling and completely ignores the issues at hand.

  14. To: Take a Look (Comment #14)
I am not sure that going to a kibbutz to work confirms that you are an idealistic person. Many people seek the lifestyle as well as the experience. It does not to me in any moment make me believe she wanted to help Jewish life flourish.

    To: TME (Commenter #13)
Silly me. I thought trix were for kids.
I think that its funny that you might use a word such as sheeple to describe a human being. And knowing that you are the premeir Jewish Antizionist spokesperson on the Paltalk chat room network, I would be amazed that you even care about this woman who worked in dare I say, the State of Israel.
If she gets the nomination, I am a Liberal Minded Orthodox Jew and I will be going to the polls saying “Obama is awesome. Obama is awesome. [Bachmann is an idiot and a flake!]

  15. Bachmann is a flake & Obama is awesome?? I guess you must have missed his press conference where he mentioned the tax break for corporate jets – which HIS people gave in 2009 – six times to distract everyone from the fact that he is totally clueless when it comes to economics. Simple truth is when the President has to address ANY subject w/o a teleprompter to follow he babbles like a dunce. Sadly, there are many American Jews who can’t accept the mistake they made in supporting him last time & will blindly do it again.
