New York City will soon ban hair-based discrimination in a first-of-its-kind policy, according to The New York Times.

The New York City Commission on Human Rights is expected to issue new guidelines this week that would consider harassment or discrimination based on hair or hairstyle to be a form of racial discrimination.

The guidelines reportedly point specifically to traditionally African-American hairstyles, including “natural hair, treated or untreated hairstyles such as locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, fades, Afros, and/or the right to keep hair in an uncut or untrimmed state.”

Carmelyn P. Malalis, the commissioner and chairwoman of the human rights commission, told the Times that the guidelines are intended as a check on business and employer policies banning certain hairstyles, which she says are “based on racist standards of appearance.”

  1. It’s only discrimination if it’s against blacks but calling President Trump “The Orange Man” is OK. THE LEFT ARE EVIL HYPOCRITES!

  2. Of course one could look disgustingly messy, totally unprofessional, have intense body odor, and dress like the homeless…. As long as it could be defined as an “ethnic look”, everyone else must tolerate it, and even admire that ethnicity.

  3. We shouldn’t make fun for two reasons- one, it never behooves us to make fun.

Second, this can protect members of our community as well.

  4. From my perspective there is nothing about most of the hairstyles that are particularly relevant to a “race” as opposed to being simply cultural. So what the guideline is actually saying is that the “culture” associated with Blacks is protected, and apparently leaving open the question of other cultures, like the hairstyle – or beards – of Hasidic Jews (among others).

  5. I am happy that a law explicitly bans discrimination for beards or payot. Generally speaking, I think employers should look for skilled, hard-working and passionate employees whatever their hairstyle, especially so in NYC where no one cares, and indeed hardly anyone notices.

  6. Another discriminatory black-supremacist law. DemocRats’ strategy was always divide and conquer, and as such some groups are given more governmental privileges at expense of the others. Sixty years ago the DemocRat privileged group was KKK, now it is BLM. Nothing changed.
