rabbi-korbman-with-rav-malkiel-kotler[Photos below.] It is a unique development in the sense that a yeshiva will be settling on the very outskirts of Lakewood, on the border of the Ir Hatorah and neighboring Toms River. But more significant about Bais Medrash of Central Jersey’s move to its new location is the fact that it reflects the tremendous popularity and growth of this respected makom Torah.

Bais Medrash of Central Jersey, well known to many in the Olam HaTorah, will now be known as Yeshiva Gedolah of South Lakewood, as the yeshiva settles in a serene area of the town, away from the hustle and bustle, in an atmosphere perfectly conducive to the undisturbed learning of the talmidei hayeshiva. The new building of Yeshiva Gedolah of South Lakewood is actually a former estate which boasts first-class amenities and is aesthetically stunning. More importantly, however, the new home of the yeshiva is fully equipped to accommodate the bochurim, providing them with all they need in one location, on campus, with full dormitory and dining facilities.

The rosh yeshiva, Rav Yosef Dovid Korbman, chose the location on Vermont Avenue, just passed Route 70, because he recognized that while it is just a short drive from the heart of Lakewood, it is removed enough so as to ensure that the young bnei Torah can learn in quiet, peaceful surroundings.

BMOCJ was originally founded as a yeshiva for bochurim returning from learning in Eretz Yisroel. During its previous years as a post-Eretz Yisroel yeshiva, BMOCJ attracted elite bochurim from the upper echelon yeshivos in Eretz Hakodesh. The outstanding kollel of the yeshiva added to the ruach of BMOCJ, whose sterling reputation grew rapidly.

That same reputation has remained as the yeshiva began attracting younger bochurim of bais medrash age – 17 to 19 years old – who wished to gain from the rosh yeshiva and from the general uplifting atmosphere of the yeshiva. The yeshiva thus underwent a transformation of sorts, focusing solely on bochurim of bais medrash age. The high level of learning and the healthy symbiosis between the kollel yungeleit and the talmidim were – and continue to be – appreciated by young bnei Torah looking for a place where they could shteig in Torah and yiras Shomayim. Bochurim from the finest mesivtos across the country have chosen this yeshiva as the place to continue their aliyah in Torah, bridging their years in mesivta and the time that they will, iy”H, spend learning in Eretz Yisroel or elsewhere.

The maggid shuir of shiur aleph is Rav Eliezer Busel, whose comprehensive shiurim and whose dedication to his talmidim continue in the tradition of his illustrious father and grandfather. Rav Leizer, as he is affectionately called, can be seen in the bais medrash well after 11:30 p.m. talking to bochurim regarding the day’s shiur or guiding and being mechzek them with his warm and personal demeanor.

The second seder is led by Rav Yitzchok Busel, who also continues in the tradition of his illustrious father and grandfather, and devotes himself completely to each sugya being learned, instilling in the bochurim a geshmak for the limud and raising the level of hasmada in the bais medrash.

The night seder, with a limud in bekius, is run by Rav Yisroel Kupperwasser, who strives to impart clarity in each daf of Gemara to the bochurim, with a goal for each bochur to complete the mesechta being learned. Rav Yisroel ensures that all bochurim keep pace with the limud. He explains and dissects the finer points of the sugya, ensuring that neither the aichus nor the kamus is compromised. Rav Yisroel’s famous Motzoei Shabbos Minchas Chinuch shiur this past winter also drew acclaim from the talmidei and hanholas hayeshiva.

The force behind the yeshiva is the indefatigable rosh yeshiva, Rav Korbman, who has made this yeshiva into one of the foremost mekomos haTorah on the yeshiva landscape. The rosh yeshiva‘s boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm carries over to the talmidim who continue to gain a geshmak in their limudim and shteig immensely. The rosh yeshiva created an environment in which each bochur‘s own unique kochos are nurtured by the entire hanhala.

Each Tuesday, the bochurim prepare for that week’s shiur klali given by the rosh yeshiva. The rosh yeshiva‘s Chumash shiur on Shabbos is anxiously anticipated by the bochurim. Next year, be’ezras Hashem, the rosh yeshiva will be giving a shiur yomi as well to the second-year bais medrash bochurim. The talmidim of the yeshiva are eagerly awaiting the rosh yeshiva‘s daily shiur.

There are many dedication opportunities available in the new building of Yeshiva Gedolah of South Lakewood. For dedications or applications, call the yeshiva office at 732-688-0793.

The reestablishment of the yeshiva on the very southern border of the Ir Hatorah is not only to be recognized as another amazing stage in the expansion of the Torah city of Lakewood, but serves as a testament to the phenomenal accomplishments of this makom Torah, which continues to produce outstanding bnei Torah possessing middos tovos and yiras Shomayim.
