by-of-boro-park-smallBais Yaakov of Boro Park has for decades been looked at by countless people as the flagship school for chinuch habanos. It is a school led by Rabbi Oscar Ehrenreich, the principal of all principals, to whom menahalim have always looked for advice and help. And now, this special mosad hachinuch may, chas veshalom, be forced to close its doors.

Rabbi Ehrenreich, who has been principal for over 50 years, has molded a school with a strong educational program that is purposefully inclusive. Attention is paid in a discreet way to children with special needs or with emotional problems or from broken homes or social and other difficulties. Rabbi Ehrenreich has created an environment in which students can grow emotionally and educationally.
There isn’t space to recite all of Bais Yaakov’s special touches, ranging from the way students from needy homes participate in activities requiring payment without the children knowing that payment hasn’t been made to the pairing of successful students with at-risk kids to mentoring arrangements that involve volunteers. There are hundreds of elementary school graduates each year and the school makes a tremendous effort to see that each girl is accepted by a good high school.

by-of-boro-park1Bais Yaakov, the oldest and largest girls school in Brooklyn, has, for close to 70 years, rarely asked the community for financial help.  Each expansion was necessary in order to provide future mothers of Klal Yisroel with the most excellent program of chinuch in both Hebrew and English studies, coupled with emphasis on middos, caring and so many other qualities that a bas Yisroel should possess.

Bais Yaakov of Boro Park, whose administrator is the devoted Rabbi Yerucham Shapiro, has always been most lenient with its tuition demands. The rates have been substantially lower than those of other Bais Yaakovs. Many students have been taken in tuition-free, or close to tuition-free, at the request of rabbonim and roshei yeshivos. The mosad has served as the only ‘klalBais Yaakov school in the borough of Brooklyn.

Parents of students at Bais Yaakov of Boro Park have received a letter informing them of the school’s financial situation and the fact that, as things currently stand, the school will not be able to open in September. The letter, also sent to various askanim, requests: “Please help us. It is unthinkable that such a large and holy institution should be closed down due to a financial crisis.”

This is a klal mosad that belongs to everyone. This is a time of crisis for a mosad that has been serving the klal for 70 years. At this point, only the help of the klal can avoid such a major disaster that can lead to a few thousand students being left without a school and so many devoted teachers without jobs.

Bais Yaakov of Boro Park has made sure to use suppliers and vendors who are from our community. They, too, deserve to be paid for the wonderful service that they have provided to the school and our community.

The survival of the school is in the hands of the klal.

The address of Bais Yaakov of Boro Park is 1371 46th Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11219.

  1. This is only the beginning. There will be many more. The financial situation is out of hand. Schools need for building expences, teachers, administrators, secretaries, etc. at least $5000 per child to be viable. In the past the tuition shortfall was covered by fundraising and assorted government grants. Government grants have been cut, fundraising is at a standstill, and parents are barely keeping a roof over their heads. Many parents that have in the past been paying full tuition or close to full tuition are now amongst those that are seeking reductions. Those that have been getting reductions till now are in many cases even unable to pay the reduced tuitions.

The bottom line is that there is a desperate need for new funding sources, or a significant increase in tuition billed, yet neither of those seem viable at this point.

    However “Yeshuas Hashem Kheref Ayin”.

  2. Let’s all understand the BYBP’s situation is unique. I do not think it is the tuition shortfall causing this problem, as this problem started before the recession. The problem at BYBP is the new building that was built, with firm pledges that were never paid!

Without getting into whether the building was necessary or not (I think it was not, the BYBP clientele in Boro Park is shrinking, not growing), it is time to call out to all the big shot gvirim in the community, and point fingers! It is their fault that BYBP is bleeding money and in danger of closing down. The parents are trying their best with tuition payments, it is time for those who promised the moon to put their money where their mouth is.

  3. BS”D

I BELIEVE THAT BESIDES ASKING FOR HELP FROM INDIVIDUALS AS HAKORAS HATOV , IT SHOULD BE EVEN MORE INCUMBENT ON ALL THE SEMINARIES WITH THEIR EXORBITANT PROFITS TO HELP THIS IMPORTANT MOSAD FROM CHALILAH SINKING. PROBABLY A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THEIR TALMIDOS ARE FROM THIS FLAGSHIP BAIS YAAKOV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Bais Yaakov of Boro Park deserves everybody help, its a school that help so many people over the past 70 years. let all do a little
and Bezrah Hashem things will work out.( i don’t have any daughters)

  5. anon number 9….. if you have nothing positive to say keep it to yourself….. these comment threads are pathetic from people who just say nonsense…..

  6. I don’t have a job, and am on unemployment. Although I never lived in BP, and don’t have a lot of money, I will be sending something to this worthy mosad. Kol Hakovod to BYBP for producing some of our finest grandmothers, mothers, daughters, friends and neighbors!

  7. “Bais Yaakov, the oldest and largest girls school in Brooklyn”

It’s not the oldest. Maybe the oldest ongoing BY, but not oldest in general.

    Hatzlocho…

  8. Another sign, min hashamayim (among dozens of other signs appearing all around us), that our time in this American golus is coming, and must come to an end.

The Ribbono Shel Olam gave us Eretz Yisrael… Eretz Yisrael is coming under increasing political attack from all fronts (most frighteningly from our good ole USA)…and she needs all of her children to now come home to defend her!

Only when we begin to make Aliyah en mass will we prove to the Ribbono Shel Olam that we are ready and worthy to receive Moshiach. This Elul of all Eluls, bringing the final geula is up to us.

  9. why don’t they say anything to us? I as a parent want to know that my daughters have a school to go to next year, and if they know of anything, they should tell the parents first. I was never told anything yet.
