To the victors go the spoils.
When Islamist rebel forces in Syria entered Damascus and overran Bashar al-Assad’s palace on Sunday, they were greeted by an array of luxury vehicles, including models from Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, and Ferrari.
Social media videos quickly surfaced showing jubilant looters exploring a vast garage inside the presidential residence, filled with elite cars from the fallen dictator’s personal collection.
One observant commenter highlighted a particularly prized Mercedes-Benz, with its iconic gullwing doors.
The rebels also stumbled upon an assortment of SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs, and what seemed to be an armored vehicle, as they wandered through the extensive palace grounds, posing for selfies, shooting guns into the air, and taking anything of value, as seen in footage shared on X.
The palace itself is a massive, imposing structure made of stone and marble, situated on a hill overlooking the outskirts of Damascus. The Guardian once referred to it as an “echoing monument to dictator decor.”
The rebels found the palace deserted after Assad fled by plane to an undisclosed location, according to Reuters, marking the end of his 24-year reign of ruthless tyranny during which he and his family lived opulently while the citizens endured hardship.
On X, videos emerged showing looters carrying away furniture and artwork, while women in full hijab sifted through the dishes and bed linens.
One clip appears to reveal an armory filled with numerous submachine guns.
The poster, TOKO, joked, “I imagine he and those close to [Assad] … thought: ‘we have enough ammo! We are invincible! Nothing can shake us!’”
Another video depicts looters discovering a secret underground bunker network beneath the main structure, with concrete floors scattered with what seem to be empty cigar boxes and gun cases.
“He who fears the people digs hundreds of feet underground,” remarked the poster, Abdullah Almousa, in Arabic.
The palace was not the sole government site to be looted, as soldiers discarded their uniforms and deserted their positions.
One user uploaded a video showing individuals allegedly carrying bags filled with “money and valuables” from the central bank.
“The smart people did not go to Assad’s palace for chandeliers, but to the bank for cash and gold!” the user quipped.

Muammar Gaddafi in 2008 warned leader of the Middle East that after Saddam Hussein’s removal and execution they could be next. Bashar Assad laughed off Gaddafi’s warning….
