Beitar Illit’s mayor, Meir Rubinstein, pressed Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu on Sunday to settle the long-standing conflict surrounding the draft of chareidim.
Speaking during a meeting of municipal leaders from Judea and Samaria with Netanyahu, Rubinstein invoked a posuk from Tehillim, quoting Dovid Hamelech’s words: “Sur meira v’asei tov – Depart from evil and do good (Tehillim 34:15).”
Rubinstein explained, “Turning away from evil – you have already done and continue to do, with great success, against Hezbollah in the north and against Iran. Now the time has come for ‘do good,’” he told Netanyahu.
He went on to clarify, “This means applying sovereignty, which will aid in the development and expansion of the Holy Land – and also resolving the crisis with the chareidi public by recognizing the importance of Torah study and Torah learners, and putting an end to the Draft Law saga.”
Rubinstein also turned to another posuk from Tehillim, citing 37:3: “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and be nourished by faith.”
He explained, “‘Dwell in the land’ – apply sovereignty over all of the Land of Israel. ‘Be nourished by faith’ – in regard to the value of Torah study.”
As he wrapped up his remarks, Rubinstein offered Netanyahu words of encouragement, wishing him strength “in standing firm against the ‘anyone but Netanyahu’ parties, who are a minority in the nation and act equally against the chareidi public and against Jewish settlers in Israel.”
Rubinstein concluded by inviting Netanyahu to attend the dedication ceremony for Beitar’s Givah C neighborhood, pointing out that Netanyahu had been present for the laying of its cornerstone. Netanyahu warmly accepted the invitation.

Very Interesting that a frum looking jew, would “urge” something that MOST Gedolai Yisroel would disapprove, either because of a direct GIRAH B’UMOS [especially these days] or the 3 Oaths.
Rav Shach ZT”L was even against moving in to these areas.
I just chalk it up to a myopic vision of some practical benefits to be had, while ignoring the far more important implications.
MEMO TO THIS SMALL TOWN MAYOR:
DO NOT OVER ESTIMATE YOUSELF. FOLLOW [& SEEK] DAAS TORAH
It could be he was just giving verbal shochad to that heretic.
The city is wholly charedi, populated by people who following daas Torah of Gedolei Yisrael.
If Jews weren’t supposed to live there, Rav Kanievsky, Rav Edelstein, any of the Chassidish Rebbes (Boyan and both Stolins have a huge population in Beitar), Rav Bentzion Abba Shaul, Rav Ovadia Yosef – any of them could’ve spoken against living in Beitar and people would listen.
Please don’t quote statements from Rav Schach Zatza”l in the 80’s. I think that by now most people recognize that the goyim hate us regardless. No more Girah Baumos is happening by taking control over Yehudah and Shomron. BTW kiryat sefer is on the other side of the green line. I agree we should seek daas hagedolim, but PLEASE, living ones
Hey there Mr. Amchu, commentor #1, there are over 70,000 Yiddish Nefashos living in this “small town” as your ignorance calls it. Nearly 99.99% are שומרי תורה ומצוותיה. (In fact there is even a big street called רחוב הרב שך.) By all accounts it’s a huge city. But you can continue to live in your holy Borough Park, Williamsburg or Monsey and enjoy your selfish lifestyle. We here in Beitar Illit will still love you.
Excuse me Amchu, but how do you know that he didn’t seek and receive daas Torah? Also, Rav Shach was niftar many years ago and things have changed drastically since then so we don’t know what he would say at this point in time.
Yup. I said the same thing during the whole WZO voting controversy. There was no need to quote gedolim of the previous dor who were already nifter. Situations and circumstances are always evolving.
