A constituitional court in Belgium’s southern Wallonia region has has permitted the continuation of shechitah, the Conference of European Rabbis announced on Wednesday as per a report in the Jerusalem Post by Tamara Zeive.

Shechita, the court ruled, is permissible under Belgium’s law, stating, that “the restriction of kosher slaughter excessively and unreasonably restricts freedom of religion and seriously harms the fundamental laws of human rights and religious rights in Belgium.”

Parliamentary legislators had previously fought against shechitah, drafting a bill stating that it should not be exempt from Belgian law that requires stunning animals before they are killed, but the court shot that requirement down.
