MK Itamar Ben-Gvir, head of the Otzma Yehudit party, is reportedly planning to make an additional demand of Likud head MK Bibi Netanyahu in return for agreeing to be part of his ruling coalition, Arutz Sheva reports. This new demand relates to the question of the Reform movement’s form of conversion.

According to Kan Reshet Bet, Ben-Gvir will insist on the coalition accords including a clause obligating the passage of a new law that cancels the Supreme Court’s ruling recognizing Reform conversion for the purposes of immigration under the Law of Return. Furthermore, Otzma Yehudit intends to coordinate this demand with its other potential coalition partners: Shas, United Torah Judaism, and Religious Zionism.

If such a law is implemented, only people who are Jewish according to halachah will be entitled to automatic approval for immigration along with citizenship and other benefits. S

  1. FOUR QUESTIONS:
    1) Does he want the country to work with its chareidi citizens, or does he want a Jewish Iran?
    2) Does he want the State of Israel to be friendly and compromising to its Torah-observant population or does he want to bring about the implosion of the only democracy in the Middle East over an unattainable ideological agenda?
    3) Does he want to bring up the standard of living of Kollel families living in Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, in Matisyahu and Kiryat Sefer, in Ramat Gan and Bayit V’Gan, in Ashdod and Ashkelon, and in cities, settlements, moshavim, and kibbutzin throughout the State of Israel, or does he want to choke them because of some sort of political-in-the-name-of-religion game?
    4) Is he an idiot, a fool, or both?

      • Proper halachah has not moved anywhere. It was always the job of the “mi’dubar and mi’duberes” to check out the yichus of the other, and that has not changed. At least in Eretz Yisroel there is some sort of data base. Shiduchim in Chutz La’Aretz – especially when dealing with ba’alei teshuvah – is even more complicated.

The ONLY reason he feels he can demand what he is demanding is because he believes The State of Israel is a Jewish state and should be run by Jewish law. But why should that be so?

    • It’s not a matter of what I think. That is an entirely different discussion; one best left to out Gedolim. I will say, however, that PRIOR to the founding of the State, all of Torah Jewery were unhappy/uneasy about it to say the least. The division came only once it became a foregone conclusion. The split off from the Agudah Party, now known as The Agudah, held we must work within the government for our benefit. The other members of The original Agudah, now known as The Orthodox Council or The Eidah HaCareidis, said no. That’s the history.

My point was onlybthatbit is CURRENTLY NOT a Jewish State and to behave as if it is, is NOT BENEFICIAL for anyone.
