Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., defended Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., on Wednesday after her comments about Israel sparked debate in the House.

The Vermont Democrat, who is Jewish, said that he feared what “is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate.”

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, Sanders condemned members of the House for going after Omar’s statements, writing: “Anti-Semitism is a hateful and dangerous ideology which must be vigorously opposed in the United States and around the world. We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel.

“Rather, we must develop an even-handed Middle East policy which brings Israelis and Palestinians together for a lasting peace. What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate. That’s wrong.”

  1. “Rather, we must develop an even-handed Middle East policy which brings Israelis and Palestinians together for a lasting peace. What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate. ”

Saying things like “it’s all about the Benjamins, Isreal has hypnotized the world” etc. is totally not engaging in debate either.

    • Exactly. As a matter of fact, if Ilhan Omar does not believe Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish state and supports a “one-state” solution, how could that be considered even-handed? Its like saying Jeremy Corbyn supports a two state solutions when all of the evidence, including the fact that he has refused to meet any Israeli politicians or government officials, even when he travelled to Israel, cannot even bring himself to say the word “Israel”, and hobnobs with people and organizations who want Israel destroyed.

  2. Why did Bernie Sanders abandon his African American neighborhood in Brooklyn and move to the WHITEST of WHITE States, Vermont? Bernie is an old time WHITE male racist who should be discredited. Bernie never paid a single penny of reparations to the black folks in this Country who have suffered under slavery. It is not Muslims who have in this Country. It has been African-Americans.

  3. THIS SANDSERS RASHA IS NOT ANI ISRAEL WITH THE OTHERS eg:cortez, OMAR ETC. THEY ARE PURE COMMUNISTS ISLAMIST DEMOCRATS ANTI AMERICANS

  4. Sanders is a bitter and angry man and leaves it all out on the nation he left. That’s what happens when you, Mr. Sanders, think the grass is greener on the other side and marry a non-Jewish woman leaving behind non-Jewish children with a guilty feeling forever. What a wasted life. You can still leave your wife and change your entire life around to the life you were born into, the life of your ancestors.

  5. “We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel.”

If that’s all she said, one could argue she is within her rights. Many Israelis would agree with her. But her talk of dual loyalty and “the Benjamins” has little to do with ideological or political points of view.

  6. Jews have a Biblical right to the land of Israel and no one has a right to give any of it away.. The land of israel has a responsiblity to protect its Jewish citizens – whiich means not negotiating with people who do not recognize its right to exist Giving away land has never resulted in peace
If Mr. Sanders really cared about do-called Palestinians, he would protest their treatment in Jordan. Or maybe he can protest this, which was on jpost.com: “products made in Gaza are unpopular due lack of supervision, poor quality control, forged expiry dates and poor safety standards in Gazan factories”.

  7. To Play Devil’s Advocate
The freshman congresswoman was right: The pro-Israel lobby uses financial muscle to influence Congress. That shouldn’t be a controversial statement.
