bedbugsWarm weather, tourism season and summer camps are all likely to add up to more bedbug infestations in the Tri-State area.

Pest control experts are predicting a jump in business as the warm weather brings out the creepy, crawly pests.

“We definitely do receive more calls for bedbugs during summer months,” Jennifer Erdogan with Bell Environmental Services told 1010 WINS’ Al Jones.

Erdogan said bedbug calls go up as the temperature climbs because the critters mature faster in warm weather. She stressed, however, the problem was not limited to travelers and summer camp kids.

“Bedbugs can be anywhere so if you’re out and about, it’s always wise to check your personal belongings,” she said.\

Experts warned that it was a lot easier to prevent bedbug infestations rather than dealing with them once they are in your home. In fact, the pest problem can grow exponentially bigger if you’re not careful.

“All bugs are cold blooded so the warmer it is, the faster they develop [and] the more eggs they lay,” Etymologist John Kane, of Western Pest Services, said.

Last year, the pests wreaked havoc on New York City, including at Lincoln Center and Howard Stern’s New York studios.
So with region’s bedbug problem likely to get a whole lot worse, extra caution may be the only viable preventative measure to take.
