US President Joe Biden called racism a “stain on our country’s soul” Tuesday night in a speech given shortly after the guilty verdict handed to Derek Chauvin for murdering George Floyd.
“There are those who will seek to exploit the raw emotions in the moment — agitators and extremists who have no interest in social justice,” Biden said. “We can’t let them succeed.”
The president called for “confronting head on systemic racism and the racial disparities that exist in policing and our criminal justice system,” albeit through non-violent means. Earlier, Biden said he hoped for the “right verdict” in the trial.
