After widespread media reports of an “apparent” assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris released statements denouncing what they called a “possible” attempt to kill the Republican nominee for president.

About an hour after news broke that the Secret Service detained a man—after seeing a gun sticking out from a fence at Trump International Golf Club in South Florida where the former president was golfing—Biden stated that his team had briefed him “regarding what federal law enforcement is investigating as a possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today.”

“A suspect is in custody, and I commend the work of the Secret Service and their law enforcement partners for their vigilance and their efforts to keep the former president and those around him safe,” Biden stated. “I am relieved that the former president is unharmed.”

“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former president’s continued safety,” he added.

Some two hours later, Harris stated that she is “deeply disturbed by the possible assassination attempt of former President Trump today.”

“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” she said. “I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law-enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden said, our administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission.”

The 58-year-old man who was detained, Ryan Wesley Routh, reportedly has a history of denouncing Trump and supporting Ukraine.

“The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club,” said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. “The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.”

“Sara and I were shocked by the second assassination attempt against President Trump and were relieved to hear that it, too, failed. But we should not rely on luck,” stated Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu at about 2:30 a.m. in Israel. “We send our best wishes to Donald and Melania, along with our hopes that all measures will be taken to ensure that such deadly attacks on a candidate for the U.S. presidency will be foiled in advance.” JNS

  1. It’s on their watch, ya know! The failures of the security attaché are the result of failures of Biden/Harris policy! The divisiveness in the country is their responsibility! Although, I concede, Trump adds a lot to it! But this ain’t the America I grew up in. This s isn’t good!
