Joe Biden will not remove Christopher Wray as FBI director if he is still in the job when Biden expects to take office in January, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Biden’s team was “not removing the FBI director unless Trump fired him,” the Times quoted an unnamed senior Biden official as saying. The Biden campaign did not immediately return a request for comment on the report.

Such a decision would be a return to tradition for the FBI. Directors are confirmed by the Senate for 10-year terms, and rarely are fired. Trump fired Wray’s predecessor,  James Comey, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, in May 2017.

  1. Wray is part of the bureaucracy club. During the Bush administration, Wray, who was then the assistant attorney general in charge of the criminal division, met then-Deputy Attorney General James Comey while Comey and then-FBI Director, Robert Mueller, were threatening to resign unless President George W. Bush agreed to end a warrantless wiretapping program. Wray told Comey, “Look, I don’t know what’s going on, but before you guys all pull the rip cords, please give me a heads‑up so I can jump with you.” And, no doubt, Wray has not been helpful to Attorney General Barr, as the latter seeks to uncover the Obama administration’s corrupt plot to take down Trump with a Russian collusion hoax. Without FBI Director Wray’s help in supplying inside information and sources inside the FBI, it is difficulty for Barr to uncover the full extent of the Obama-led witch hunt. But Wray is part of the club, and he has no interest in tainting his fellow club members, including Comey and the rest of the club, so he is not helping Barr in his investigation.
