Biden to NATO: Don’t Worry, Trump Doesn’t Know What Article 5 Is

Vice President Joe Biden told North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies in Latvia on Tuesday that they shouldn’t worry about Donald Trump’s threats because the candidate “doesn’t even understand what Article 5 is.” The clause, which stipulates collective defense in the case of a NATO ally coming under attack, was invoked for the first time after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In a New York Times interview this summer, Trump told reporters that if elected he might not automatically defend NATO allies, saying he would first look at their contributions to the alliance, and would only automatically aid countries that had “fulfilled their obligations to us,” by paying their organization dues. Biden on Tuesday worked to reassure the Baltic States in particular, saying the U.S. feels a “sacred honor” toward NATO. He said the United States has “never reneged on any commitment we have made” and added that the real-estate mogul’s words should be disregarded and are “nothing that should be taken seriously.” Read more at POLITICO.

  1. It’s Biden who doesn’t know Article 5. It doesn’t say there, or anywhere else in the North Atlantic Charter, that the US has to pay to station so many troops in Europe and commit so much resources to the defense of Europe. We should be ready to help defend Europe if necessary, pursuant to the charter, but nothing obligates us to spend so much money preventatively.

    • This is the same logic that the isolationists in the 1930s promoted; as a result we were ill-prepared to fight Japan and Germany. The consequences were of course catastrophic.

      • The best example of repeating history is the Obama administration throwing Ukraine, Georgia and Eastern Europe to the Soviet, oops, Russian wolves.
Your position is 100% based on whatever Democrats support and nothing else, including condemning Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu for daring to come to the U.S. and beg for his country,s safety.
If a Republican invented an immortality serum, you’d condemn him for causing overpopulation.
Sorry for the harsh words, but you’re too smart to be doing this innocently.

    • It wouldn’t surprise me if VP Biden had no clue about it until he was sent out with this talking point. He likes to sound knowledgeable, but I still remember in one of the VP debates he didn’t know the difference between Gaza and the West Bank. Gaffmeister Biden is one of the most unqualified VP’s in history.

  2. Poor Uncle Joe. He somehow wandered off on his own from the dog track. I heard that he missed the free matinee lunch. I hope he didn’t dribble on himself in front of the media.
