The extensive US-Canada border, stretching 5,500 miles and being the longest in the world, has not been included in President Joe Biden’s recent border security measures, thus remaining a gateway for migrants aiming to enter the country illegally and seek asylum, as per sources quoted by The NY Post.

Due to the lack of the same stringent measures as imposed on the southern border, June saw a record number of 3,600 illegal crossings — surpassing the total recorded for all of 2022, based on leaked Homeland Security data acquired by The Post.

“The executive order doesn’t affect us,” a Border Patrol agent stationed at the northern border informed The Post. “Family units are getting released and singles are sent to detention for adjudication.”

Loopholes in Asylum Restrictions

Despite the southern border’s asylum restrictions, over 100,000 migrants were permitted entry in June, according to an analysis by The Post of leaked Homeland Security data. The policy aims to restrict asylum claims for those entering illegally until such crossings fall below 1,500 per day on average but includes numerous exceptions.

Meanwhile, the northern border has increasingly become a favored route for migrants seeking illegal entry into the US. With fewer physical barriers and a limited number of border agents, the area has witnessed a rise in such activities, according to DHS sources speaking to The Post.

Resource Reallocation and Migrant Surges

The surge in illegal entries at the US-Mexico border has diverted resources from the northern border, including the reassignment of agents to conduct video interviews of migrants detained in the south. Some agents have even been redeployed to the southern border to assist in processing the influx of migrants over the past three years.

The Swanton sector, covering New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, has become the primary hotspot for illegal crossings along the northern border, with migrants from 85 different countries intercepted since October. The sector has also recorded significant numbers of migrants from India and Latin America between October and May.

Local Encounters with Migrant Smuggling

The Post recently provided a glimpse into how local residents in the region have observed migrant smuggling operations on their properties. Chris Feeley, 52, shared his experience from February: “Now I’ve got the Border Patrol guys on speed dial.” Feeley, observing from his hunting tree stand, has witnessed migrants crossing his land openly over the last three years.

In one incident, he saw deer scatter before two men “of Mexican descent” with backpacks and walking sticks appeared. “He stopped right underneath me and was looking at his iPhone and was following a trail, so obviously somebody gave him a route of which way to go,” Feeley recounted, who now carries a firearm on his property. “I was just stunned, I didn’t know what to do. I just let them walk off, I gave them 10 minutes before I went back to the barn to call Border Patrol.”

Increased Security Threats

The northern border has also seen a rise in individuals on the terror watchlist attempting to cross at ports of entry. Between October and May, more than 198 such individuals were apprehended, with the previous financial year recording 484 apprehensions, according to federal data.
