Despite President Biden’s “crackdown” supposedly cutting off asylum claims for ilegal border crossers, more than 100,000 migrants were allowed into the US in June.
The massive figure includes 30,000 illegal border crossers were who were allowed in. That is more than one-third of all migrants caught at the US-Mexico border, according to leaked documents obtained by the NY Post.
The documents, which were leaked from the Department of Homeland Security, show that thousands of illegal migrants are still being allowed into the US each week, despite Biden’s claim that his executive order would greatly reduce the amount of migrants entering the US.
In addition, there are various loopholes and programs launched by the Biden administration which allow of additional migrants to enter the US every days through legal means, inlcuding the CBP One app and arriving by plane via Venezuela and Haiti.
An analysis by the NY Post puts the total number of migrants allowed to stay in the US in June at 103,500. Illegal border crossings dropped 20% in June compared to June 2023.
The 84,000 migrants caught at the border last month is the the lowest illegal border crossing figure during the Biden administration. The migrants released into the US have future court dates. The US has a backlog of over 3 million pending cases across the country.
Biden put forward an executive order, effective June 5th, which will remain in place as long as crossings don’t fall below an average of 1,500 daily crossings for seven days in a row — a level not reached since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
If it is paused, it can be put back in place if crossings average 2,500 or more for another week.
With the order in place, migrants who cross the border illegally should be made ineligible for asylum. However a number of exceptions are allowed. There are also additional ways for migrants to be allowed to stay in the US.
Migrants from more than 100 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa who crossed into the San Diego region are exempt, since their countries do not accept deportees.
There are also up to 30,000 migrants who enter the US by plane from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela via a humanitarian parole program.
Another 1,450 migrants per day who use the CBP One phone app to cross the border legally from Mexico at an entry port.
Biden’s Homeland Security chief, Alejandro Mayorkas, spoke about the executive order as being a success, while visiting Tucson, Arizona, last week.
“The president’s actions are working because of their tough response to illegal crossings and because they built on our sustained effort to exercise our full authorities to enforce the law and impose consequences for illegal entry.”
