Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter on Monday night to once again defend Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar over the comments she keeps making about Israel — which have been deemed anti-Semitic by many, including fellow Democrats.

Omar, 37, has been catching a lot of flak recently for suggesting that US politicians are being forced to “pledge allegiance” to Jewish leaders, wrote on Twitter “I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee.”

California Rep. Juan Vargas responded to Omar, tweeting, “Questioning support for the U.S.-Israel relationship is unacceptable. Israel has and remains a stalwart ally of the United States because of our countries’ shared interests and values. I condemn her remarks and believe she should apologize for her offensive comments.”

Responding to the tweet from Vargas, Ocasio-Cortez shot back: “I‘m curious if Rep. Vargas will further explain his stance here that it’s unacceptable to even *question* US foreign policy.”

“Plenty of Dem members have asserted that discussion + debate on this issue is fair and merited,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “Is this stance a departure from that?”

“I remember a time when it was ‘unacceptable’ to question the Iraq War. All of Congress was wrong, including both GOP & Dem Party, and led my generation into a disastrous + wrong war that virtually all would come to regret, except for the one member who stood up: Barbara Lee.”

  1. “I‘m curious if Rep. Vargas will further explain his stance here that it’s unacceptable to even *question* US foreign policy.” A lie. Nobody said any such thing.

“Plenty of Dem members have asserted that discussion + debate on this issue is fair and merited,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “Is this stance a departure from that?” Another lie. The issue is Rep. Omar claiming support for Israel is “[being] expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country”.

“Plenty of Dem members have asserted that discussion + debate on this issue is fair and merited,” Ocasio-Cortez added. “Is this stance a departure from that?” Still another lie, this one implicit in a rhetorical question. To answer that question, Yes, claiming support of Israel is “Pledging support to a foreign country” is very, very different than debating support of Israel.

“I remember a time when it was ‘unacceptable’ to question the Iraq War. All of Congress was wrong, including both GOP & Dem Party, and led my generation into a disastrous + wrong war that virtually all would come to regret, except for the one member who stood up: Barbara Lee.” I’m not sure if this should be categorized as a lie or simply a reprehensible, dishonest, morally repugnant comparison. She’s now claiming that calling out Rep. Omar’s non-stop antisemitic commentary is the equivalent of supporting the Iraq war? How in the world did such ignorant, dishonest antisemites ever get elected?

    • The above post was written sloppily, without proofreading, and missed at least part of what was said in the original article. Sorry for that.

Rep. Vargas did indeed say “Questioning support for the U.S.-Israel relationship is unacceptable.” However, that was a subpoint to his main point, which was “It is disturbing that Rep. Omar continues to perpetuate hurtful anti-Semitic stereotypes that misrepresent our Jewish community,” Rep. Ocasio-Cortez conveniently ignores that part of his statement entirely in her response.
Furthermore “Questioning foreign policy” is a deliberately neutral term she’s using, as opposed to “Questioning support of a democratic ally”. Would she similarly support a defender of South Africa’s old apartheid policy as a “Questioner of foreign policy?”

  2. Like always, Cortez doesn’t get the point or understand the issue.

It’s not questioning American foreign policy that is the issue. There are plenty of anti-Israel legislators.

The issue is ascribing sinister motives to one exclusive area of American foreign policy and not giving coherent arguments as to why you believe things should be done differently but rather relying on accusations of sinister motives to make your point.

That is what Omar is being accused of. That is not what Cortez is addressing.
