Kobe Bryant died in a helicoper crash in Calabasas Sunday morning, TMZ Sports reports.

Kobe was widely considered one of the greatest NBA players of all time, making 18 All-Star teams during his 20 year career with the LA Lakers. He was a first-round pick in the 1996 draft, winning 5 NBA championships, 2 NBA Finals MVPs and he was the league MVP in ’08.

Kobe was traveling with at least 3 other people in his private helicopter when it went down. A fire broke out. Emergency personnel responded, but nobody on board survived. His wife, Vanessa Bryant, was not among those on board.

Kobe’s daughter Gianna Maria Onore – aka GiGi – was also on board the helicopter and died in the crash, reps for Kobe tell TMZ Sports. She was 13.

The father-daughter duo were traveling to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice with another player and parent when the crash occurred.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Kobe has famously used a helicopter to travel for years, dating back to when he played for the Lakers. He was known for commuting from Newport Beach, CA to the STAPLES Center in DTLA in his Sikorsky S-76 chopper.

  1. It’s no wonder that comments like these turn up on a non Jewish site when they report something in a positive light abt the Jews!!
If you don’t like it just take a deep breath and skip to the next story.
It’s a national news story and actually a big tragedy!!

  2. Friends,

This is news. A news outlet reports news. Does this news have an effect on the Jewish world? Yes, a cautionary tale of using transportation in less than ideal conditions, whether a chopper or an SUV. Mr. Bryant was a celebrated personality, a family man, a teammate, and an influence on many people. Don’t denigrate a fellow basar v’ dam. Four of Hashem’s creations were taken in this incident. Remind yourself who runs the world.

    • I agree with everything you said other than the “family man”. But yeah it hits you Bec these “athletes” can sometimes appear to be “bigger than the world”, in the prime of health and physique. But you’re absolutely right, Basar Vidam, in other words, they put on their pants (shorts) one leg at a time just like everrrybody else

  3. Kobe was “good” at best. Very similar to Lebron James. Totally overrated. Michael Jordan was the best player all-time ever. No discussion. Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Jabbar, were very good.

  4. everyone who’s asking why its being reported grow up. some people find it interesting. I dont follow sports, but if all you can think about is what you find interesting or lofty, grow up. and “al tihi tzaddik harbei”.

  5. To all the predictable comments about him being a guy, this being a jewish news site etc. Kosher outlets are much needed. Probably today more than ever. Sports is one of the few kosher outlets and whether you like it or not he was an very large figure which helped us enjoy that kosher outlet. Many of us as teenagers had our much needed break by watching him play. You can disagree but no point in being negative. A family was torn apart by an unspeakable tragedy and the loss of a person who helped us get reenergized for Torah. Sorry you cant understand with an open mind.

  6. Believe it or not, there are some frum yeshiva boys, who needed the outlet of sports to give them a break from the study of Torah. Appreciating a non frum person, Jewish or not, for his accomplishments and chesed is a Torah attribute and is not to be denigrated. And a true Rebbe who is a mench would approve of that. 60 years ago, my Rebbe, Rav Motel Weinberg, zt’l, looked at my wallet and saw many pictures of Mickey Mantle. He asked me; “why don’t you have a picture of me in your wallet?” I said: “Rebbe, if you hit 52 home runs you would be in my wallet”. His response: “Gut gezocked”. He appreciated greatness. It is a sad commentary on our frum world that greatness in the secular world is considered shtus. No wonder our children are leaving that world in droves.

    • If they allow the kids to follow sports, unfortunately it can very well have a negative effect on their children’s shidduchim. They can possibly not get accepted into certain yeshivos and bais yaakovs. They can be rejected by certain summer camps.

  7. To all tzadikkim g’luyim, Kikkar Hashabbat also reported this, and I guess by all your standards it is a Jewish and Frum site. If you’re so concerned, get off the internet and quit pontificating (now that’s a goyshe concept, but it fits like a glove…).

  8. To the Naysayers on here… You may live under your little rock and not find this newsworthy, but your son, nephew or grandson definitely does. If it bothers you so much you can simply scroll down.
