US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday Washington would consider rejoining the Iran nuclear deal only once Tehran resumes complying with the agreement.

Speaking for the first time since becoming the top US diplomat, Blinken said in a news conference that “if Iran comes back into full compliance with its obligations under the JCPOA, the United States would do the same thing.”

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) refers to the nuclear deal signed by former President Barack Obama, under whom current US President Joe Biden served as vice president. Former President Donald Trump left the deal in 2018 and imposed sanctions on the Islamic Republic in a campaign of “maximum pressure.”

“Iran is out of compliance on a number of fronts. And it would take some time, should it make the decision to do so, for it to come back into compliance and time for us then to assess whether it was meeting its obligations,” Blinken said.

“We are not there yet, to say the least,” he added.

  1. Not getting too excited about this. He’s only slowing down the process of re-entering into “talks” because he’ll be under immense scrutiny from all those who remember the shipment of billions when obama left office. He will either speak with the ayatollahs in secret; or wait a little to tell us all gullible Americans that Iran is complying and it’s time to open “talks.” Meanwhile Iran has already exceeded the amount of production of uranium to rebuild their nuclear capability. Israel should be (and probably is) skeptical of what Blinken is saying.
