According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Ukraine has managed to reclaim approximately half of the territory initially seized by Russia during its invasion. However, he acknowledged that Kyiv is facing an arduous battle to recapture more land.
In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Blinken stated, “It’s already taken back about 50% of what was initially seized.” He also emphasized that the current phase of the counteroffensive is still in its early stages and poses significant challenges. He noted, “It is tough,” and cautioned that the process would not unfold quickly. He estimated that it might take several months to make further progress.
Initially, there were hopes that Ukraine would swiftly expel Moscow’s forces from its territory after launching a summer counteroffensive. Unfortunately, those hopes are now fading as Kyiv’s troops encounter difficulties in breaching heavily fortified Russian positions in the southern and eastern regions of the country.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously remarked that progress against the Russian forces was “slower than desired.” Despite the challenges, he asserted that Kyiv would not be pressured into rushing its efforts to reclaim the territories under Russian control.
