bloombergMayor Michael Bloomberg said today that the thousands of teaching jobs he threatened to cut are likely safe under the state budget approved in Albany this week. The state’s plan increases aid to public schools by about $1.1 billion, and gets rid of the governor’s proposed $700 million education cut.

When Bloomberg presented his preliminary budget plan in January for the city’s next fiscal year, he warned that some 14,000 teachers could be laid off because of the drop in state funding.

Today, he said it is likely those jobs are now safe. He also said the city is not going to lay off large numbers of teachers.
