Contractor Menachem Shechter discovered 38,000 shekels ($11,000) in old banknotes in a Bnei Brak home he’d been told to empty before beginning renovations.

Schechter went to Chacham Nissim ben Shimon, a prominent posek, and explained that the homeowner told him there was nothing of value left in the place, because her late father had already distributed almost everything he owned before his death.

Should he return the money?

The rov ruled that the money belonged to the owner, because she would never have told him to discard the money had she known it was in the house. He blessed Shechter that in the merit of his good deed, he’d have an abundance of brocha and success.
