Boehner: Obama Disrespectful to Me

john-boehner-republicansJohn Boehner thinks President Barack Obama is engaging, smart and brilliant but also remains smarted by the president accusing him of taking taxpayers hostage to secure a tax break for the rich.

In an interview with Leslie Stahl of “60 Minutes” for broadcast Sunday night on CBS, Boehner said Obama showed him “disrespect” by calling him a hostage-taker.

“Excuse me, Mr. President I thought the election was over,” Boehner said, according to a transcript obtained by POLITICO. “You know, you get a lot of that heated rhetoric during an election. But now it’s time to govern.”

The relationship between the president and the incoming House speaker was the focal point of the Sunday night piece, the most recent foray by Boehner into prime-time news.

Their most recent example of working together bore fruits for the GOP. The deal Republicans secured on the Bush-era tax cuts, which also extend unemployment insurance, has the GOP giddy. Boehner said he found “common ground” with Democrats, but said he rejects using the word “compromise.”

Boehner’s kind words about the president also come with a caveat: the two see the world very differently.

“I think he’s engaging,” Boehner said in the taped piece. “Certainly smart. Brilliant. But – you know, we come from different backgrounds. And I think our view of the economy- is also very different.”

Another place they may find common-ground: the golf course. The two are avid players, except Boehner is said to be a prolific golfer, while Obama may be closer to a duffer. The pair have spoken about playing golf several times, but it has never happened. The Ohio Republican is holding out hope.

“Listen, playing golf with someone is a great way to get to know someone,” Boehner said. “You start trying to hit that little white ball, you can’t be somebody that you’re not, because all of you shows up.”

  1. oh please, hostage-taker was an understatment. What the republicans did was sickening, though im not sure if i think less of them for holding the middle class hostage or Obama for giving in.

  2. No, it wasn’t sickening. They were holding to their principles, especially after the country overwhelmingly sided with them in November.

Many of the “rich” people who make over $250K are actually small businesses filing as individuals; hurting them won’t help you and won’t create a single job.

  3. holding on to principles and have been proven not to work and are stupid is not a virtue.
I’m not sure what planet you live on, but on my planet the country did not vote overwhelmingly for anything, they never do in an off season. the republicans where voted into office, not by an oveerwhelming majority of the country, and not even by an overwhelming majority of those few who voted.
Cutting taxes prolongs and raises the deficit, it is that simple. $250 k makes you rich regardless of what you want to call it (the median income is about $50 k) they wont get “hurt” by allowing tax cuts that where supposed to be temporary and where never ratified expire, and it would help decrease the deficit

  4. Yankel,

I’m not sure what planet you’re living on but the Republicans picked up 63 seats in the House, 6 seats in the Senate, 6 Governor’s seats and control of 17 state legislatures across the country. The citizens of this country made their wishes very clear.

The best solution for the deficit is cutting spending and creating jobs to increase the tax base. Raising taxes on people who create those jobs will only make the problem worse.

Never ratified? They were passed back in 2001 by the House and the Senate, not by executive order.

For someone who is so concerned about the money in other people’s wallets I have to ask you: how many jobs have YOU created recently?

  5. Yankel,

On planet Earth, the Democrat socialist agenda was resoundingly rejected by the public with a massive 60 seat restructuring of the House.

Money that people earn and use to develop businesses helps the economy and provides jobs. Money in the hands of bureaucrats who drive up the deficit at every turn will just be used to fuel more wasteful and destructive programs and it will never be enough to prevent them from driving the deficit even higher with lavish and wasteful spending.

  6. tzoorba and phil if you are worried about the deficit then you cant possibly be for tax cuts those two positions are dimetricly opposite. Bush enacted thse tax cuts (they were supposed to be temporary) remeber? did they raise revenues? no in fact quite the opposite they led to a defecit. This is an absolute fact. now you can argue as Cheney said that “Reagen proved defecits dont matter” that is opinion, foolish opinion but still opinion and you can make that claim. you cant argue on facts. you can be for tax cuts becasue of nonsense about job creation, youd be wrong but at least your positions wouldnt be self contradictory.
A majority of this country did not vote in this election, im sorry if that hasnt occured to you, thus it can hardly be said that a “majority” of the “public” rejected anything.

  7. Yankel,

No, they aren’t diametrically opposed. Taxes are raised from those who work and there aren’t enough people working because there aren’t enough businesses creating jobs. Raising taxes on them won’t create a single job. Deficits balloon due to insufficient revenue and overspending by the government, especially during a recession. Hopefully, the election last month was the nail in the coffin of that grossly stupid behavior. The deficit tripled under this “Obamanation” that you probably voted for.

“Nonsense about job creation”? From the way you write (misspellings and all) it would seem you are probably a municipal/state/federal employee. That’s obvious from how little you understand about the way revenue is generated in this country. Government doesn’t create wealth, businesses do.

Which reminds me, you never did answer my question: how many jobs have you created lately?

Until you create a single one, keep your eyes out of other people’s wallets.

  8. phil to answer your question, ive created about twice the number of jobs you have whatever that number is… double it.
i’ll walk you through this as if you are in second grade From the way you write (lack of logic and all) it would seem you are probably in first grade though i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.
You want the government to provide you with things like safety (army) some benefits (not sure if you like medicaid medicare or social security, but its safe to assume you are for some of it), roads etc etc. Right? to do this the governement need smoney, so far so good? the governemtn gets money by taxes. This is called revenue. Cutting taxes has been tried under bush, it leads to loss of revenue for the government, of course it leads to more money for buisiness, thats not waht we are discussing. hope this helps. Let me know which point you are stuck on i’d ve happy to elaborate

  9. Yankel,

From your infantile and smarmy ranting it’s quite obvious that you work for the government, don’t know the first thing about business and never created a single private sector job in your life. Government has a duty to serve the people by providing certain basic services; not to serve themselves, spend like drunken sailors and then grab more and more tax revenue. That was the message of the November election (or putsch if you prefer).

We live in a capitalistic economy where wealth is created not by government but by business. If you don’t like it I’m sure Cuba would love to have you. Oh, I forgot, they just laid-off half a million government workers because they couldn’t afford them any more, despite taking everything from their citizens. How about Venezuela?

When the government cut taxes they sent rebate checks to all Americans. Were you so concerned about the deficit that you gave yours back, as they stipulated you could, or did you keep it and simply have a problem with other people holding onto their hard earned money? Hypocrite.

  10. Ok where to begin, their was no rebate under bush. The last mass rebate was under clinton, (who i assume you must like since it sounds like you like rebates), there was a rebate precisly because their was no defecit, the govt was opperating at a surplus. who wouldve thought that in a mere (or should i say long) 8 years all that colud be destroyed.
Im glad that “it’s quite obvious that you work for the government” but like everything else in your comment you are dead wrong.

  11. that is tottaly fake, dont tell me you support the stimulus plan, man you are the most mixed up republican ever, you make it seem as if Rush has his head screwed on straight.
Your “question” is complelty irrlevant for at least 2 reasons:
    1) Me returning my tax rebate doesnt change a thing a 10 trillion + defecit wont change based on a few dollars.
and 2) I can support/oppose a policy without acting on it. for example you probably supported the war in Iraq, Did you go fight did you send your kids? why not? Dont feel bad that doesnt make you a hypocrite becasue society doesnt work that way, you support what you think is best for the country even though you dont act on it on your own

  12. Yankel,

You are the definition of a hypocrite.

Someone who takes tax rebate checks from the government when he can have them go towards the deficit, yet complains about the deficit when others get tax breaks

You’re a sad, sad little man.

  13. Ive already addressed that “point” that my rebate would absolutly make no difference to the defecit not even a drop in a bucket. (btw i never said i took the tax rebate, in fact i never got one remember?)
question for you: did you support the iraq war?
    did you go fight?

  14. BTW, if you actually read the report I cited you’d realize it’s not about the Stimulus Plan, it’s about the stimulus effects of the 2001 and 2008 Bush tax rebates.

    READ. LEARN. THINK. REPEAT.
