  1. I am so saddened. I daven that the family can somehow be comforted. I taught Sholom in grade 7 & he was a terrific child. Klal yisroel has suffered a terrible loss. There are no adequate words. I am saying tehilim for his neshoma in gan eden.

  2. this is a korban tzibur let’s all stop a momment from what we are doing and be meshtatef in the tzaar of his family and do teshuvah!

  3. Boruch Dayan HaEmes!!

Is his full name thus “Shalom ben Shabsi”? Or, doesa he or his father have any second or third names?

  4. Boruch Dayan HaEmes!!

Besides our Tefilos and Limud HaTorah L’Illui Nishmas the Nifter — besides our prayers and study of the Torah for the elevation for the soul of the deceased man, we must be Mispallel that the wicked hit and run driver be quickly found and given the full punishment for this fiendish murder that he committed.

For far, far, far too long, countless automobile drivers have been driving in a severely brutal manner, projecting a severely callous attitude of:

“GET OUT OF MY WAY!! I OWN THE ROAD!!”

and thus greatly threatening the safety of pedestrians and other moterists.

When one of these mean people thus actually injures or kills a person, it is certainly very well past due that we take him (or her) and give him (or her) (and anyone else who did the same thing) a very severe punishment — MAYBE, even, yes, the electric chair!!

[There is a dictum in the Talmud that states that if a certain crime has become excessively widespread in society, then even if that crime does not incurr the death penalty, the death penalty can still be given for that crime in order to put a stop to it. (Of course, this is an extremely complex serious issue that would have to be determined by appropriate scholars and authorities.)]

If this would be done, Im Yirtza HaShem — G-D Willing, the roads and the freeways and the streets would be a lot, lot safer!

  5. i knew the
Werther’s here in Norfolk VA and was so sad to hear of their son’s passing. Sholom was such a wonderful boy and always a smile on his face. my heart goes out to the whole family that they shall get through this tragedy with G-d’s help.

  6. May hashem comfort the Werther family together with the avelim for Yerushalayim and Tzion.
    Mishpachas May

  7. As an illustration to my above remarks in comment #13, I will relate an incident that occurred a few years ago in the town of Petaluma where I reside in Northern California.

A teen-age boy, whose father had just given him a brand new special model Mustang, wanted to show off his new car to some of his friends. So he took three of them for a ride in it on one of the nearby country-mountain roads with a lot of curves and started racing in it AT NEARLY 100 MPH!!

Understandably, after a couple of minutes of this “fun,” the car flew out of control, turned over, and crashed. Amazingly, this teen-age driver survived with only a few scratches. However, his three “friend” passengers were horrifically injured. One of them died a few days latter, and the other two had to undergo extensive surgeries to be somehow sown back together.

The police did say that they wanted to have the teen-age boy get some jail time. However, the boy is a bit of a “chashuva bachur” as he is a top FOOTBALL PLAYER on his high school team!Furthermore, his father is a very rich man in the community (he obviously must have a lot of money as he didn’t mind buying his spoiled son a very expensive car).

So all that was done to him was that his driver’s license was suspended for three years, and the local judge — NOT EVEN IN A COURTROOM — in a little school classroom, the local judge met with the boy and had a little chat with him!

The boy never showed any meaningful remorse and never apologized to the parents of the dead friend. Understandably, average townspeople are rightfully enraged. They are not rich and yet have to pay out several hundreds of dollars for a ticket when, by mistake, they take a wrong turn or whatever diving infraction. This prestigious “big fish” though, who maims and murders, is not even given a slap on the wrist!

  8. Dear Werther Family,

May Hashem comfort you. For a tragedy, there are no words. I recently suffered a tragic loss as well, and feel deeply for the pain you are going through now.

May you be comforted by the emes of nitzchius.

  9. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet.
I knew shalom werther in yeshiva and he was a great guy.
He was one of the nicest people I met there.
I am greatly saddened by this tragic loss at such a young age and I pray that his family be comforted.
Hamakom yerachem otchem b’toch sh’ar avalei tzion uvyerushali’im.

  10. will we take this as a wakeup call for TESHUVA or should we say it is just coincidence? AKA how much more Tzaros does KLAL YISROEL need to get us to do TESHUVA?

  11. My heartfelt condolences to the entire Werther family. My son, Shlomo, learned with Shalom in Dallas for the last year and a half. He sat right beside him in a Mishna shiur. They ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner together, played ball with one another, joked with each other, and had many a conversation with one another. Although my son is in Beis Medresh and a couple of years older, he and Shalom developed a friendship. Please know my son spoke very highly of Shalom and said he was a wonderful, sweet boy. We are all terribly devastated by this tragic loss; I can only imagine the grief Shalom’s family is feeling.

    “HaMakom yenachem es’chem b’toch shar avay’lay Tzion V’Yerushalayim.”
“May Hashem comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”

May you and your loved ones never know from such pain again.

    ———————————————–

    For Yisroel Feldman…

“Lakol zman v’eis lechol chafetz tachas hashamayim.” “For everything there is a season; a time for every experience under heaven.”

While I understand and appreciate your outrage, this is not the time for, nor is it the proper venue for judging and giving such tocheicha. Kindly refrain and let this be about the family. Thank you.

  12. One cannot even begin to imagine what a tragedy this is. I hope, that with time, somehow, the Werther family find comfort. Yehi Zichro Baruch.

  13. Dear Werther Family-
There are no words to comfort only know that we met Shalom in Dallas, and there wasn’t a finer boy in the Yeshiva. We daven that our own sons will grow to have some of his middos.
What a loss for klal Yisroel.
    The Baynash Family

  14. Mr. Anonymous:

Thank you for your observation; my two remarks (#13 and #17) about punishment for the rotzayach would have probably been much more appropriate at the newer article about the arrest of the rotzayach, which was latter posted at http://matzav.com/lakewood-police-arrest-hit-and-run-driver-responsible-for-bochurs-death.

It must be stressed that this is not only MY outrage, it is the outrage of the entire Lakewood community; it is the outrage of every person who hears about this extremely tragic event; and, it is the outrage of the whole Werther family! It is well publicized that when someone is injured and nothing is done to the person who did it to him, the pain of the injury is much more severe. When proper justice is done though, the victim and his family do feel some small measure of comfort.

So this issue of punishment for the rotzayach is also about the family.

  15. Bde what a terrible tradgedy the acceptance and kabbalas gzar din by the werthers is a mussar sefer we could all learn from this special family

  16. when he lived in milwaukee he always had a smile on his face and was always nice to me may his neshama go ito the depths of heaven from the askotzky family we will always remember you
