Scientists have discovered a new cure for those suffering from arachnophobia, the fear of spiders: remove a small brain chunk. Researchers reported in Neurocase that a man was relieved of his intense fear of eight-legged insects after doctors removed part of his amygdala.
The patient, a 44-year-old man, was suffering from an extreme form of arachnophobia that caused seizures.
The invasive surgery isn’t likely to be performed in most run-of-the-mill cases. Still, the amygdala removal was a success. Not only did the man no longer scare at the sight of spiders, he was suddenly fascinated by them. Read more at the Washington Post.
