Brazil Exempts Jews From Shabbos Exams

A new Brazilian law signed by President Jair Bolsonaro allows Jews and non-Jews to delay tests that fall on religious festivals.

Jews have been exempted from Shabbos exams in the past. In 2016, 76,000 observant students delayed a national high school exam to Motzoei Shabbos, and in 2017, the yearly exam was moved to Sundays after a long-running campaign by Jewish groups and members of other religions.

Brazil’s 120,000 Jews constitute the ninth largest Jewish community in the world.
